Greenwich-based Time for Lyme Inc. held its "Time for Lyme Rocks Miami's South Beach" fund-raising gala April 2 at the Hyatt Regency in Old Greenwich.
About 500 supporters attended the event, which raised more than $1 million for the Columbia University Medical Center Lyme Disease Research Center, as well as for its ongoing education, advocacy and prevention programs. "Dateline NBC" correspondent Chris Hansen, a Stamford resident, served as master of ceremonies.
New York Times best-selling author and Lyme disease survivor Amy Tan accepted the Time for Lyme Public Awareness Award for her efforts to educate the public about this devastating illness through her writing and charitable activities. ESPN TV reporter Brooke Landau, a Ridgefield native now living in Los Angeles, spoke about her 7 1/2-year battle with Lyme.
Attendees enjoyed a cocktail reception and gourmet dinner, bid on live and silent auction items, and danced to music with a Miami beat, organized by co-chairs Ken Bacco, William Bainbridge Steele and Lynda Withiam and their committee.
Corporate sponsors included Greenwich Capital Markets Inc.; Maclaren USA Inc.; UBS Investment Bank; Brooks, Torrey & Scott Inc.; Greenwich Hospital; Kenneth F. Bacco Inc.; Pyrenees Capital; CRT Capital Group LLC; Rings End Inc.; Goldman, Sachs & Co.; JetBlue Airways; Morgan Stanley; Subaru Distributors Corp.; and Tiffany & Co. of Greenwich.
Along with its partner, the Lyme Disease Association, Time for Lyme is dedicated to funding research that will find ways to prevent Lyme disease and find answers for those with late-stage Lyme. To that end, the organizations are partnering with Columbia University to endow the Columbia University Medical Center Lyme Disease Research Center, the first facility in the world focused on chronic Lyme disease. The goal of the Research Center is to develop more accurate diagnostic tests, better treatment protocols and a cure for chronic sufferers.
