Characterization of the physiological requirements for the bactericidal effects of a monoclonal antibody to OspB of
Borrelia burgdorferi
by confocal microscopy.
The bactericidal effect of Fab-CB2 is not dependent on the induction of spirochetal proteases but is dependent on the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+.
Supplementation of Ca2(+)- and Mg2(+)-free medium with these cations restored the bactericidal effects of Fab-CB2.
(Reread the above paragraph, please...until you catch on.)
The mechanism by which a Fab fragment of an antibody destroys a bacterium directly may represent a novel form of antibody-organism interaction.

Novel...not quite!
E. Required by immunological process. Magnesium, immunity, and allergy: Mg is required for several steps of immunological reactions
1. Lymphoblastic transformation, a prerequisite of secretion of antibodies by lymphoblasts, requires Ca2+ and Mg2+
2. Mg is required for synthesis of proteins, immunoglobulins included
3. Antibody-induced complement activation is Mg dependent
4. The antigen-immunoglobulin-complement reaction induces degranulation of the mastocyte

We need the Mg and Ca to make healthy antibodies to fight Bb. Without enough = damage to what is called the "fab" portion of the antibody rendering it ineffective. The "fab" portion...well, visualize a stalk of broccoli. It is at the top.
All these damaged antibodies cause an increase in TNF alpha (proinflammatory cytokine) too because that is one of TNF alpha's jobs - get rid of unhealthy antibodies.
We have to restore Mg FIRST to stop Ca influx. Our stores of Ca are huge, but without enough Mg...in time, those will become depleted too. There appears to be a stop level. The body will only let the critical minerals drop just so far.
Ca causes muscle contraction, Mg muscle relaxation. Essential for heart functions!
In review:
Mg (and Ca) are needed to make healthy antibodies.
Mg is an anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine.
Mg is a detox.
Mg is needed to make ATP (energy) in every cell which applies the brakes to the glycolysis pathway (PFK issues).
Mg INactivates an enzyme that puts the brakes on the cholesterol pathway.
Mg will help with "thick blood"...fibin issues.
Mg is needed to make enzymes and hormones...which are proteins.
Mg is needed to make serotonin which breaks down to make melatonin...needed for sleep.
Mg will help prevent DNA damage (mds choice website linked above). This may also help prevent cancer.
According to doctors at a cancer hospital in Romania...
there is a SIGNIFICANT drop in Mg levels very fast at the outset of this disease.
I believe it spirals downward. This is one very, very toxic (acidic causing) pathogen.
In my opinion, you should be DEMANDING IV doses of Mg from the doctors, not non-stop powerful abx. which further deplete the nutrients, destroy the beneficial bacteria (which absorb and make nutrients for us) and MAY cause this keet to mutate to its harder to rid form.
This is not a "popular" view. I understand. I, too, once held great hopes that abxs. would eliminate this pathogen.
Restore the balance to heal. Support your own immune system. Give it the nutrients it needs to fight. They are many and they are very large doses (impossible orally).

What is Ca2? Is that the stuff in tonic water?

Tell me - are there any risks or side effects with IV Mg? I'm thinking about it for my mom who has fibrin issues along with her Lyme.
Thanks!
By electomagnetically balanced, I mean, Mg ++ (alkaline) and B vitamins -- (acidic).
This is nature's best...
This is why things that are "electromagnetically" balanced are good for us. For example, vegetables...organic
;-) contain some minerals together with many acidic vitamins. Fruits...NATURAL sugar (++) and acids. BALANCED.
Vets, for DOGS with arthritis, often recommend Epsom salt baths! Personally, I add a little baking soda too when I bath my dog.
I give my small (15 #) DOG kid's yougart on occasion (Ca and probiotics), cut up dried apricots (high in Mg), and cottage cheese (Ca) with dried (higher in Mg) parsley. Actually dog food is "healthier" than ours, believe it or not! (We've discussed this before on the board.) That's why dogs TEST positive for lyme easier than we do. The dog foods are HIGHER in the nutrients needed to make antibodies which then "show up" on the tests. Only healthy antibodies show up to prove one has lyme.
But you'd never catch me eating dog food!
To stop cardiac problems...very high doses of Mg are often given IV. Of course...slowly! The patient is closely monitored/watched. The biggest problem is relaxing the diaphram muscle too much (stopping breathing), but in a doctor's office/hospital setting, this can be very quickly countered by giving IV Calcium.
Restore the balance asap, but keep in mind...this has to be MAINTAINED for as many hours a day as possible with SMALL (!) doses more often until the infection is completely gone.
This pathogen replicates slowly, but not THAT slowly! 2 become 4, become 8, become 16, become 32...and we are starting out with more than 2 keets! Massive infection...fast.
One last thing because this complicates the issue...babesia.
It is curious but once again, in the 1970s in Germany, vets gave dogs who had neuro babesia IV sodium bicarb and it worked! These dogs were very acidic.
Hummmmm.
We're supporting a huge industry. Lyme is not the ONLY disease that follows these similar pathways...I can link 2 others.
Do we really want to find a cure?
Many, many years ago, doctors were using Mg chloride to cure MANY diseases (I talked about this in my Updated Nutshell post), but once vaccines came on the market...the natural approach was pushed aside. Unfortunately we messed up some of the vaccines years ago.
The general consensus among nutritionists is that many Americans are low in Mg and in chromium. And we wonder why so many develop diabetes and cancer?
We are what we eat. It greatly impacts our health.
It is very hard, and many simply won't give up junk foods and exercise. This is critical to staying healthy and to fighting off pathogens that we are constantly exposed to.
I am in contact with an HIV person who's mom just had a lumpectomy. Prior to surgery she went on the Budwig diet (not for lyme! as it's calcium based). To the surgeon's surprise, by the time surgery was performed, her lumps were 1/2 their original size!
Make a LOT of hydrogen and get it INTO the cells helps knock off a LOT of pathogens.
Our choice of which mineral to use combined with acids depends on the particular pathogen.
Myasthenia Gravis (sp?) patients would be harmed by Mg treatment since already their muscles are waaaaaaay too relaxed. Can you figure out what these people need?
Without Mg, one cannot hold onto K (potassium) or Ca (calcium) over time - these often rise at first, then drop. That makes Mg, in my opinion, THE MOST CRITICAL mineral. Then there's the 4th major electrolyte...Na (sodium).
We know that at least for psorasis (icky miserable skin condition), Na helps "soften" the skin cell walls allowing Mg entry. Sodium is often used prior to photo therapy (neg. charge).
P.S. Frequencies may also help, but these are "neg. charges" too...so head's up as far as restoring the minerals.
Sorry...rambling. So much info. swirling around in my head! Time for a break.

However, the key would be to also correct the digestive, absorbtion issues, as Marnie says..and change the way we eat to absorb these nutrients.
Chronic infection meeses this system up entirely, and then when you add the meds...kablam!
My guess would be use this ..to begin to restore..but a systematic cleanup and new diet assuring FOOD becomes your medicine (need absorption and elimination to be good for this)..would be your long term wellness key.
Not an easy task...but I'm working on part two. Never got the cocktail myself.

Myers Cocktail
by Glenn Rothfeld M.D.
Hundreds of physicians around the U.S. use this therapy, which is largely unknown and not much written about. The Myers Cocktail is named for the late John Myers, M.D., a Maryland physician who used intravenous injections of nutrients to treat his patients. Currently, the nutrient cocktail has been popularized by Alan Gaby, M.D., president of the American Holistic Medical Association and a physician who writes a lot about nutritional factors in medicine.
The idea of the Myers Cocktail is that many illnesses and conditions are associated with digestive disturbances such as bloating, maldigestion and food sensitivities and that people with such conditions may not absorb many of the nutrients needed to return them to good health. Also, many diseases cause the body to use nutrients at a faster rate, or to require higher amounts for proper healing. When nutrients are injected intravenously, the digestion is bypassed. Furthermore, the levels in the bloodstream are temporarily increased so that the nutrients are "coaxed" into the cells, and frequently into the mitochondria where they are active. This temporary boost frequently "kick-starts" the cells, so that energy is produced more efficiently in them.
Many chronic conditions respond to a series of Myers Cocktails. In my experience, they are useful in fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and chronic depression, where patients feel an energy boost lasting days or weeks. In the case of fibromyalgia, decreased pain can be observed. In other chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis, there is electron microscope evidence that the gut "leaks" nutrients, and the injections help get necessary nutrients into the cells. Chronic asthma and other lung disease, congestive heart failure, and chronic allergic problems can respond with more energy and less symptoms. Patients who get sick constantly with infections may find an increased immune response, with less susceptibility to in acute situations such as viral illnesses. The usual composition of the Myers Cocktail is: 1. B complex...........................................................1 cc
2. Vitamin C................................................................1-10 cc or more, usually 222 mg/cc or 500 mg/cc
3. Magnesium..............................................................1-4 cc either 20% chloride or 50% sulfate
4. Dexpanthenol (B5)..................................................1- 2cc
5. Calcium...................................................................1-4cc (sometimes not given in cardiac problems or in older patients)
Frequent additions are:
1. B12.........................................................................1 cc
2. B6...........................................................................1 cc
3. Adrenal Cortical Extract (ACE)................................1-2 cc
4. Glyceron (an extract of licorice called glycerrhizin).... 1-2cc
5. Glutathione (an anti- oxidant).....................................1-2 cc
The latter three are not FDA approved and thus cannot be imported by physicians across state lines for the purpose of treating patients. The injections are diluted to 20 or 30 cc, more if there is increased vitamin C which tends to be thicker. A butterfly needle is then inserted into a vein, and the injection is given very slowly, at 1-2 cc per minute. Side effects are remarkably rare and almost always are limited to local irritation of the vein.
Allergy to the preservative in the nutrients must be tested for. The most common sensations are heat and flushing (a magnesium effect), and the taste of vitamins soon after the injection is begun. The injections are usually given 1-2 times per week, and beneficial effects are usually felt by the fourth shot. Many patients with chronic conditions choose to continue the injections every 1-4 weeks or when they feel their energy slipping.
Why aren't more physicians using this therapy with wide applications and a strong record of safety? First of all, most of them haven't heard of it. There are no studies of the Myers Cocktail, though Spectrum Medical Arts of Arlington, MA is planning to begin a study of the cocktail in fibromyalgia this fall. There are studies supporting the need for injectable magnesium and other nutrients in asthma, heart disease, and other chronic conditions. Another reason is the bias in medicine against nutritional treatments of illnesses, borne of the fact that pharmaceutical companies support much of the research in medical therapies, and no drug company will fund a study looking at the effects of simple vitamin shots. Also, there is a tendency to look for single ingredient therapies (for instance, vitamin C for the common cold) and the cocktail works better, in the opinion of its proponents, than using the nutrients individually.
Finally, old habits die hard in medicine, and the habit of reaching for a prescription pad for every illness will die harder than most. However, the need to look for safe, inexpensive therapies for chronic illnesses is becoming urgent under managed care insurance systems and it is possible that the Myers Cocktail will be re- discovered as a good example of this.
