My daughter has had several picc lines. The last time, she had problems with clotting. Genetic testing found a deficiency related to this. Given this, her doctor again ordered a picc line. They couldn't even get it in because of clots! They suggested a medi port; but we aren't doing anything else until we see a hemotologist. Have any of you had similar problem? And what experiences have you had with medi ports? This is getting scary!

Is that the same as hypercoagulation? I don't know much of anything about this except I have seen numerous references to people with Lyme having hypercoagulation.

My daughter went through at least 7 picc lines because of clotting. She now has a por-a-cath in her chest. Had a minor problem with that until the surgeon extended the line further into her heart.
She takes a baby asprin every day now (not while on the picc lines) and uses 2 saline flushes and 2 heparin flushes after every dose of antibiotic. She has not had a problem in a long time ( 1 1/2 years).
If you are using the picc line for blood draws that supposedly can cause a problem. We were told to flush with four saline and two heparin after a blood draw.
Hope this helps!

Inflammation {LYME} can cause hypercoagulation. You can go to www.hemex.com for more information on this. Lots of Lymies have it and don't know it.

You must also be careful of too much heparin..Our daughter went thru a period of having the opposite problem from the heparin..She would have had a problem clotting if she had been injured..
This was from too many heparins for the picc..lymemomtooo

I had a problem with hypercoagulation. A blood test can pick up high, out-of-range fibrinogen levels. Fibrinogin is part of the clotting mechanism, and is affected by chronic inflammation. When my cardiologist heard that I had Lyme, he was not at all surprised at the high fibrinogen level. Also, fibrinogen is now being looked at as a possible predictor for cardiac problems. My doctor had a pharmacy that could make heparin lozanges, which made it easy to take. We continued to monitor the fibrinogen levels and I am not now taking it. We were trying to figure out if the fibrinogen levels shifted with flare-ups, but I moved and am inbetween doctors now, so never had the chance to really study it. Hope & healing to all....Justice
