I got a sinus infection last JULY and finally had surgery to clear out the maxillary sinus in January.
My ENT said prior to surgery that I didn't have a problem with infection, I had a problem with drainage. Meaning that when the sinus was opened, the infection would go away.
[I'm sitting there thinking "but I have lyme disease."]
So now, 5 wks after surgery, he cultured my sinus and I STILL have pseudomonas and staph aureus in there.
GGGRRRRR!!!!!
Back to the antibiotics... which I REALLY don't want to do as I am having major stomach issues right now.
I'm pulling out my Rife machine as we speak!

That just stinks! Kinda makes you feel all of the surgical measures weren't really necessary because the problem still exists huh?

I took abx for one week after the surgery.
Strong? The only thing really strong [that was working] was the quinolones and I'm not going there again.

You've been quacked my dear!!!!!You better get that machine out. It's your only chance. I do believe in the quack book 6 mths of abx for "sinus infection" is enough.

TuTu...the friend I told you about that had the surgery about the time you did and had a CSF leak got an infection recently too...albeit a not as serious one and could clear it with a week of abx.
Unfortunately the poison of choice lately seems to be levaquin.

This sounds so basic, I am sure you have already thought of it, but I rebound to keep my sinuses moving.
Have you tried rebounding? If you haven't and don't have a rebounder, you can sit on the corner edge of your bed and gently bounce up and down......or I could take you horseback riding.

Seriously, your doc is not totally wrong. If you can keep the snot moving, the antibiotic can get in there and knock out the infection.
My husband had to resort to accupuncture along with abx to finally clear up his sinus infections. He hasn't had one now for a couple of years.

Two thoughts: my friend took levaquin for 5 days it helped some (but not totally). Another friend noticed that once she started going to the chiropractor her sinuses were much better. Go figure. Hiker53

I'm still seeing the Bio Cranial doc...so maybe it will eventually clear with his help.
I've missed my last two appointments due to bad weather. I missed the one today and have an appointment for next Monday. [again]
My ENT said that some people lose the ability of the cilia to move the crud along.
Rebounding, huh? Been thinking maybe I should get one of those...wasn't sure my sciatic nerve could handle it.
Levaquin? I did take way more than 5 pills. Sets my nerves on fire. Ain't going there again.

I also had a DO tell me that drinking through straws & chewing gum helps too.

Have your Drs. cultured your goo for fungus? They are finding that, in a lot of chronic sinus infections, the issue is not only bacterial, but fungal.
Mayo clinic has a PHD/MD who discovered this about 8 years ago...he met a lot of resistance, but his work is finally being accepted.
Yes, as AliBabba said...salt water irrigation works wonders...since you are too far from an ocean or the Dead Sea.
Perhaps Music Man can hit some notes that will kill the snuggers? (snot buggers)
I am now on Mino again...and after two days, my sinuses seem to be getting better...perhaps for you too?
I find being outside really helps shrink the swollen sinuses...then when I come back inside, all hell breaks lose again...moral of the story?

The staff may be able to be treated with a prescription antibiotic ointment up in the nose... so to save the tummy, maybe consider that.
The next point I want to make is...
The first way a body rids itself of toxins is through sweating... the skin.
The second way is through the sinuses.
Could excess toxins be a problem? Especially since your sweating may be at a minimum due to the cold weather?
I would have major sinus problems but I am still taking the Sudafed 12 hour capsules once a day. That one little pill helps dry things out without extra drugs I don't need.
Hope you get some good help and maybe an idea from the info here?
Feel better soon... or you MAY be hitched to the front of a sleigh the next time it snows.

The ENT/surgeon said the goo was black when he did the surgery....but the culture did not show fungus...Go figure.
Snow?? Gonna get a foot of it tonight. Maybe I'll go play in it tomorrow and then go back inside to the warm air??

Over on the yahoo group, infection & inflammation, several people have done well for chronic sinus infections, with a compounded spray. If I recall it had gentamycin and amphotericin (antifungal) and a smidge of cortisone (to reduce inflammation).
How about considering that? Go register for the group on yahoogroups.com and search the archives and you'll find the discussions.
Also, put your pillows in the dryer for an hour. Or buy new pillows. I keep reading new studies about how our pillows develop fungi and bacteria and dust mites and all kinds of gross stuff. It can't help the sinuses to sleep on that. I just washed all my pillows in hot water cycle in the washer and then put them in the dryer for 90 minutes. They seem much fresher!

Thanks, oxygen! I was on gentamycin and clindamycin compounded spray. It did a pretty good job, all things considered.
The addition of an anti-fungal sounds like a good idea.
I do have one of those special hypoallergenic pillow covers. It's supposed to keep out all the mites, etc.
I'm going to ask my ENT about another spray tomorrow. I don't know if he'll go for it. It was the first ENT who prescribed the spray last time.

i use XOPENAX, sp, and lately ASMATEK, sp; i'm tooo lazy to go to another room to check spelligns of their names. they both are helping plus NASONEX and ALLEGRA ....

Have you ever tried Xlear. It is a nasal spray made with xylitol and grapefruit seed extract. I used to get sinus infections all of the time until I used that.
You can get it from iherb.com. I would recommend putting in in a different atomizer as it comes out more liquid that I like.
Good luck kicking that infection.

Yes, I have it. I wish I had known about it BEFORE getting this infection. It may have helped to prevent it.
I agree that the spray bottle is a difficult one to use.

Tutu, PM me if you want to chat about some possiblities with your rife machine. I know you can get something moving and going with it.
I wouldn't be afraid to hit it three times a day with any known freqs that disrupt those two bacteria. Attack them, lady.
The abx seem pretty hopeless from what I've read and seen in your posts for the last several months. Chiro should be able to help some too.

Guess what?! The snow completely missed us! They were predicting 7-12 inches and we barely had a dusting!
So I have NO CLUE what MO is sending your way!! The meteorologists don't know either!!
Yes, I need to call or email you about the Rife. I have little confidence in the abx. I've tried everything known to mankind over the past 7 months.
DR is prescribing Bactrim and the same nasal antibiotic I had before. I think it actually worked to some extent.

Tutu, For what it's worth, both my hubby and I were swabbed about 2 years ago and we both had staph way up there.......we were on Bactrim for 6 months, plus compounded nose spray.
Evidently this can be quite common with chronic lymies says our LLMD.
Staph is a tough bugger to get rid of......check it out and see how much Bactrim they recommend to eradicate it.

my daughter had her 2 sinus surgery in 2 mts..after 2 one found a bad fungus that didn't show the first time..after 2nd one she is so much better and can breath again...like lyme she was sick for a long time and could't find out anything ..now we know it was a very bad fungus that was harden in her sinus...good luck and take care
