looking for some suggestions for pain meds for severe unrelenting headache.
non narcotic suggestions only or very low low narcs.
i understand meds like tramadol and ultram have very low levels of narcotics, but the headache med must be able to be taken with low dose naltrexone so it cannot be a strong opiet.
any suggestion are much appreciated. i have an appt with my dr tomorrow and i need to know what to be put on.

For me, none of the prescriptions stuff worked so I had to develop alternative methods to fight the horrible headaches:
Apply ice packs to head, face
Deep tissue massage of head, face, neck, body
Apply pressure to pressure points (hands, neck, face)
Deep breathing techniques, meditation or mindfulness
go to a dark room, no noise, sounds, smells..calm the senses
Chew gum if its weather, travel related
If you feel like crying...cry...let it out... release the pain/stress you're holding in
eat ice cream fast, drink extremely cold water (brain freeze)
sometimes eating food may help (saltines, toast); raise blood sugar
caffeine pill plus taking aspirin or OTC pain reliever.
herbs: lavender, peppermint, ginger...could possibly help
reflexology massage of the feet areas
increase magnesium and water intake

Is it a pressure headache? If it is, you could try Diamox.
My kids (18 & 22) have unrelenting headaches 24/7. I know they have had a headache 24/7 since 1999.
They had shunts put in this summer and the headache is better but it's never gone away.
They take Tramdol/Tylenol daily.

Hi Derek, Headaches have been one of the most debilitating symptoms for me. I am now on a preventative med called Topamax.
It is not a pain med it is a preventative like I said so you take it everyday. It has helped me a lot.
I still get some headaches when I am herxing but they are far and few between now.
I take a lower dosage and when I feel as if one is coming on I double up on it.
The 2 side effects I have noticed is the higher the dosage I would feel numb and spacey. Not good!
The other side effect is weight lose and lack of appetite. But, I have that anyway with the treatment.
It is used for migrains and acutally for seizure treatment. I was very leary at first but I am glad I started it.
Good luck, also acupuncture worked awesome up until I was finally diagnosed and started treatment. After starting treatment nothing but topamax has helped my headaches.

Zomig is a miracle worker for acute headache. For a preventative there's Amitiptyline, Topamax, Cymbalta... Try massage too.

This is an incomplete list of pain medication that can NOT be taken with Revia/ Naltexone.
It definitely cuts down on your options. Wish I could be of more help.
I take vicoprofen and it works great, but, unfortunately, it is one of the many drugs listed as being contraindicated when taking naltrexone.

The only thing that takes the edge off for me is butalbital.
Nothing else helps at all, but this one seems to make it so I can function somewhat.

How do you know you have encephalitis, just curious. What tests were done for that?
Butalbital helped my daughter some. Now she cannot take it due to another med, and just does caffeine (coke) for a migraine.
She had two very distinct headaches. The migraines are being treated, and quite successfully, with natural progesterone cream, and the caffeine too. Hers are definitely hormone-related.
The other headache, which was in a different place (back and top of head) was there 24/7 for more than 2 years, and kept her out of school.
We tried: massage, acupuncture, physical therapy, therapeutic swimming, and more; then went to meds like trazadone and topamax (unbearable). She went to a pain mgmt. clinic at a major hospital, more drugs (amitryptilene gave her seizures, there were problems with everything really).
Finally, we went to an MD, covered by insurance, who was alternative (he mixes mainstream Western med. with alternative). He had her eliminate all potential allergens from her diet for a few weeks, and within a few days, her headache completley disappeared! (It got worse first though, just a note of warning).
She stayed on that diet for some weeks, then gradually reintroduced foods. She now avoids dairy and gluten, and carries an Epi-pen for the dairy, which is a severe allergy at this point.
This did not work for PAB's kids, for which I am sorry, and might not work for you, but you would be able to tell within a week of eating only rice, veggies, apples and poultry or fish. No gluten (wheat etc.), dairy, nuts, citrus, tomatoes, berries, soy, seeds, etc. Worth a try!

To my surprise, my consistent headaches of late (they lasted for days for the last couple of months) went away soon after I started taking Wobenzym N (systemic enzymes).
I do not know if that is a fluke of timing, because it could be that I simply got beyond herxing on my other treatment, and that the headaches were due to bacterial die-off. But I am continuing the Wobenzym (which are not normally considered a headache treatment)! Hope you feel better soon.

I know I sound like a broken record, but this is working great for me.
My LLMD doesn't do the IV Glutathione, but suggested I take the ALA with the NAC and it has made a huge improvement in my headaches.
I also recently read on my NAC bottle that alcohol depletes glutathione.....FINALLY making sense of the alcohol intollerance I experienced while sick with lyme.

Just a warning, butalbital (fioricet, fiorinal, etc.) has as a possible side effect chronic daily headache. An internist prescribed this for me when I was suffering terribly with headache and ear infection.
I took it a few times per day. I later learned that you cannot take this drug that often--you can only take it once in a while.
After 3 months of continuous terrible headache, I finally got to a neurologist (headache specialist) who informed me that I was suffering from rebound headache from butalbital. It was horrible.
The neurologist prescribed indocin (indomethacin 25 mg) instead. Said he never prescribes butalbital anymore due to the rebound headache side effect. Indocin is an NSAID.

hey pab-
no LP has been performed, wont do it.
i know its silly since ive had severe headaches for 2 yrs now, but i just cant bring myself to do it.
i know i would most likely have a higher opening pressure, but the treatment would be no different except for the option for a shunt, etc, if it was needed.
i am trying to avoid all those things altogether but eventually ill crack i guess...
diamox doesnt help so one would think its not pressure related but diamox doesnt always help reduce icp as far as i know?

Hi Derek,
When I had unrelenting headaches, I was given a lot of different pain meds along with phenergan suppositories etc.
When I took a valium it would relieve the headache bigtime and I could sleep.
I think when our bodies are in a high state of stress we don't realize it with everything else going on.

All I know is that it worked for me.
The other thing I did was I went to the Jefferson Headache Clinic and was given IV magnesium. It helped some. Hope you get some relief.

Have you tried Feverfew (herb)? I never have, but I heard it's pretty effective for headaches.

Hi Derek,
I'm sorry the headache has you so down.
The only thing that helps my headaches (migrane or other) is chiropratic adjustments.
I have a chiropractor who specializes in atlas and cranial adjustment. You could google "Atlas Orthogonal" and see if there is one in your area if you want to give it a try.
It has been a lifesaver for me.

Hi Derek, Imitrex really works for me. The headaches can be brutal. I feel for you.
We also use Excedrin Migraine, Vanquish, and Percogesic.
Whatever you decide to take, remember to catch it as soon as it comes on. If the headache settles in, it can hang around for a week.
Hope you get some relief.

Do you remember the dosage of Diamox you had tried?
I take Diamox daily. I rarely get the pressure headaches anymore.
My kids have shunts because they couldn't take enough Diamox to bring their pressure in the normal range.
There are other meds to take for PTC.
My sons and I take Relpax if we get a migraine or really bad headache.
My kids tried every OTC drug and many prescription drugs and nothing relieved their headaches.
I wish there was an easy fix!

If you think you might be clenching your teeth at night(or daytime too), it could be contributing to headaches. Check out this website [URL=http://www.headacheprevention.com/][/URL] . As a dentist, I've made hundreds of these things and found that by relaxing the temporalis muscles, those tension headaches, migraines, neck pain are greatly reduced or disappear altogether.

Hi,
So sorry you have headaches they can be horrible to deal with.
This is what I have taken to help my headaches. Relafen, decongestants, Zyflamend OTC, Stephania root herb liquid extract, massaging my head, neck, caffeine, and laying on my spine roller.
The best thing that helped me tho was being on antibiotics, my headaches went from severe to mild, it showed on my SPECT scan.
I also found diet was very important for me; keeping my yeast under control, no aspartame and no MSG.
If I was having a migraine rubbing peppermint oil around my head worked good. If I caught it in time it would disappear, does not work for pressure head pain tho.
