I just heard from friend who is trying blood irradiation to treat lyme. They take out about a pint of blood, then irradiate it and put it back.
What do you all think?
Has anyone tried this? Any good results?

I am assuming you are talking about UVB?
If so, hubby tried 3 or 4 treatments back in 2002 before he had done any antibiotics for lyme.
He defintely had herx reactions. The ACAM doc who did this also did IV hydrogen peroxide treatments on the same day.
In my opinion this treatment could be helpful for viral issues and possibly bartonella. But I think it has little effect on lyme or babesia. That is just my opinion.
Can be very expensive. One doc charged $125 I think per treatment and the 2nd doc charged at least $500 per treatment (think it was more but can't remember exactly).
It would qalso be helpful in comparing prices to know how many times the blood is passed under the UVB light -- some docs only do it once and others do it at least twice.

Thanks Bea - yes, I think that's what it is. She first told me she was getting UV light treatments...then I asked for more detail and she explained what it was.
Why do you think it may hit bart and not lyme and babs?
I will try to find out more detail on cost.

In my opinion it is not going to work on anything intracellular. Just whatever is floating freely in the blood.
I think there was a PubMed article posted on LymeNet several years ago by a member called LymeScience that actually showed some clinical research which proved that UVB would not kill lyme.
If I get a chance I will try to find that article.
I do remember that hubby checked with insurance and at that time they would only cover this treatment for 2 conditions I think -- one was organ transplant and possible rejection and the 2nd was for heart infections such as endocarditis (which can be caused by bartonella in some cases).

Babs is intracellular -- inside the red blood cells. That is why I don't think the UVB (ultraviolet light) would work. I don't think the light can penetrate the cells to kill the babs.

Its too bad our whole bodies can't be irradiated as is done in the food industry. Of course we'd be killed by it. Irradiation definately kills bacteria though. No ifs and or buts about that technology.

some papers say that it is helpful because it creates a "vaccine" of sorts......little corpses of dead bugs (ie would probably catch some lyme and others) in the blood; same concept.
