Hey Scott..sorry to hear of the slide. I haven't tried Coartem, so I'm afraid I'm not much help.
A couple of thoughts:
-Have you tried Artemisinin? Our LLMD had me go on it. Just started on Sunday. So far so good. Haven't had night sweats the last 3 nights. I take 1 capsule 3x / day, 3 weeks on, 1 week off.
-What about yeast? Have you tried diflucan? (I haven't). But I know yeast can cause similar symptoms.
The thing I hate most about this disease is not knowing what is what.
Hope you start feeling better.
BTW..there will be an article about the UOS screening on 5/11 in the Boston Globe South tomorrow. There was one in the Duxbury Clipper last week.

Hi All I can tell you is my son instantly had a reaction of flu symptoms from that drug for about 2 weeks. He only took it for 3 days and was suppose to take it for 7 days. The sweats were drenching and the dryness was unbearable (skin, mouth, and mucous membranes). The drug did seem to stay with him, like you said, even when off the symptoms continued. All he said was, it was hell and he would never recommend it to anyone. He is on ABABS, they are supplemental drops for Babs: $80 That is all he is on. I believe he is fighting yeast as well. If you have been on antibiotics for awhile, you could have that too. Do you take probiotics? Let me know how you are doing.

Hi, sorry to hear that you are still not doing well. Are you taking that stuff for yeast? Linda

The Coartem is probably long out of your system by now. When I took it I had almost immediate relief of symptoms. Unfortunately the relief didn't last, all symptoms returned about 3 days after finishing the course.

Shouldn't you follow up with another drug? I have been thinking about trying it myself but would then re-continue Mepron/ zithro.
I started artesunate last week and it seems to be helping. I was feeling bad for several days but the last two days have been great - feel normal, if you can believe that!

Hubby did 8 rounds of 3 days on this med. For him it did not do much of anything at all -- either positive or negative.
If you are having babesia symptoms now, then in my opinion the med brought the babesia out of hiding and the only way to get better is to continue treating babesia. But in my opinion, you will need a combo of meds and to continue treating for several months in total.
In simple language babesia symptoms are usually caused by the parasite multiplying or by it being killed off -- symptoms will be pretty much the same but may be more intense during die-off.
In my opinion, if a babesia med is actually working you should initially see a drastic increase in babesia symptoms -- but over time the symptoms should decrease and you should actually start feeling better.
Unfortunately the feeling better part seems to be missing with hubby's current babs treatment.
