I am awaiting IV treatment and have not been treated in 3 years. I had existing OCD which was making me semi-functional but the last six months have been hell. I went to a psychiatrist who said Lyme can make OCD worse so he put me on Zoloft. At 50 mg. I felt like I was going mad. Does anyone know why this would happen. I paged him and he told me to stick with it. No way! If Lyme is making the OCD as bad as it is, why would Zoloft which is supposed to help make me so much worse. I can't sleep for more than 2 hours at a time which doesn't help.

Could it be neurotoxins from untreated disease? Thanks.

You need to tell him again how bad this is. If you will Google, you will find that MANY people get WORSE on SSRI's .. which Zoloft is.

Make sure you call him again. In the meantime, if it were ME, I would up my intake of magnesium just in case that is part of the problem. SSRI's deplete magnesium and it is critical.

I was going to make a separate post on this but havent had the time.

Have you had 23andme genetic tests done?

Based on my results and the P450 drug interaction table ( http://medicine.iupui.edu/clinpharm/ddis/main-table ), I found that tamoxifen was extremely toxic to me. When I removed it, I was amazed at how my sleep improved.

It was also interesting to see all the drugs that were toxic to me. Explained a lot of bad/weird reactions I had to certain drugs.

I was told never to take and antidepressant. If I needed one I would have to go the natural route.

As LymeToo suggests: look to magnesium.

I could not tolerate Zoloft, either. It was terrible. The doctor (not LL) also told me to stick with it. I could not. I just did not continue. I did much better without it.

I tried a long list of various pharmaceutical antidepressants (Tricyclics were all awful) & sleep Rx before I knew lyme was at the base of all this. Every single one caused me to be so much worse. My body - and the bodies of many with lyme - just don't do well with some of these chemicals.

I found much better ways, so know there are other approaches. You might do better with adrenal support & magnesium. I sure did. Many with lyme are magnesium deficient and that will cause a lot of trouble.

I was also taking Cytomel at the time (a thyroid T3 that wore off each afternoon and dropped a bomb on me. In case you take cytomel, my experience has not been the only disaster of those using it. Better with combination T3 & T4 in a natural Rx: NatureThroid).

Thyroid issues are also mentioned in the adrenal thread.

Also be sure to check with any food items as to "excitotoxicity"

Fish oil, too. Sardines for breakfast may serve you well. I really like the brand: Wild Planet. VitaCost and iHerb.com have good prices.

Wild Salmon, too. Even just 1/4 lb. can do the brain much good.

Certain B vitamins may be deficient just be sure to read up before supplement as they must be in balance and without safe doses.

I reverse-engineered what my doctor told me so take this for what it is worth.

Look at the CYP (Cytochromes P450) family. After "CYP" there are alphanumeric characters. These are the substrates that correspond to the top row of the table.

For instance, I had one red and 2 yellow for CYP2d6. If I go to the 2d6 column I see all the drugs I shouldn't take because they make me toxic. It explains so much regarding issues I have had with certain drugs.

I think some of the substrates are "related". She asked me if I have trouble clearing caffeine (yes). While I don't have any "1a1's", I do have bad 1a2 and 1b1.

I have not had genetic testing done but that drug is not for me. I still don't feel like I did before I took it. The psychiatrist got upset and made it sound like my worsening of OCD was psychological because I was concerned about the drug. I had no problem taking it as I am desperate for help. I will take magnesium and see if that helps. Thank you all for the information.
