Today in the Sunday paper was the usual weekly parade insert and it's unbelieveable, although it shouldn't surprise me or any of us other Lymies given how the media / politicians / medical community and people whose lives haven't been touched by Lyme...at least not yet, turns a blind eye when it comes to Lyme. The article I'm referring to is titled, How worried should you be", it's about scary diseases in the news. Whoever has "mad cow disease", raise your hand? Anyone? What about Bird Flu....... anyone? Well then, there has to be a bunch of rabid people running around in your neighborhood. What the HELL is going on? What about Lyme? The statistics coming in from people infected by ticks runs circles around these other scary diseases. Listen to the symptoms of this scary disease, whooping cough, it induces a nagging cough that lasts a month or longer. Whew!!!!!!! I don't mean to make light of it or any other disease but isn't that what's being done to those of us with Lyme. No mention of it at all. It's a shame.

Kennedy, After reading this post, I went and looked at the article.
Hmm, the local papers make a big deal out of West Nile virus, but I think the real danger there is the decimation of the bird population.
Haven't seen too many reports of rabies in the newspaper, but my sister in northern New York state told me that people were getting rabies without apparent contact with rabid animals... although some of them had seen bats in their houses.
The info on Mad Cow disease says that there were only two reported cases in the U.S. Hah, I've read reports online from people who worked at nursing homes, and had patients with variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, which is the human version.
I think our risk of contracting that is much higher than they're telling us.
As for the lack of information about Lyme and other tick borne diseases, well, that seems to be par for the course, doesn't it.
People don't even realize that it's a "scarey disease."
I've read medical articles from ten years ago that seemed to show that the medical profession was progressing in their understanding of Lyme. Now, ten years later, people still can't get diagnosed when they present with obvious symptoms.
Now THAT'S scarey!
So, I agree with you, it was frustrating to read that article. Hmmm, I noticed they didn't mention AIDS or Hepatitis either.

p.s. Enjoyed chatting with you, VERY late on the Saturday chat.
