Hi,
My 8 year old son had a blood test today for lyme, at my suggestion to the Dr. A little history back in mid June he had a deer tick, I am not sure how long it was on him but when it was removed it was bloody. I watched for a bullseye whch never occurred. As any eight year old he has minor complaints over the past few months which I had not thought much about untill today. Two weeks ago his elbow was sore and swollen and stiff took to the dr x rays showed nothing, the swelling persisted and was told to go to an orthopedist who said he probally hyrer extended it, then on thursday his knee started becoming swollen and sore and has been limping since then, hence the lyme test since again nothing showed on the xray. To you the more experienced does this sound like Lyme? I will know in 2-3 days when the blood comes back but the wait is going to kill me. I feel guilty for not picking it up sooner. Any feedback and advice would be appreciated and any insight to what he may be facing would also help. Thanks in advance.
Hillary

Hello and welcome to Lymenet!

Your son's symptoms sound very familiar. Don't kick yourself over not catching it sooner - many of us here don't even recall a tick bite.

Even if his test comes back negative, I would suggest getting him to a LLMD as soon as possible. There are many reasons why a Lyme test could come back negative - #1 being what type of test that was run and what lab ran it. If it was a PCR or Eliza, please don't discount a Lyme diagnosis, even if it's negative. A much more accurate (but still not definative) test would be a Western Blot, run by IgeneX (in CA). A regular doctor wouldn't be running lab tests through them - you need to find an LLMD.

NJ is rampant with Lyme. Another thing to consider is coinfections - you can pick up numerous other infections from a tick bite - Bartonella, Babesiosis, Erlichiosis, or Mycoplasma. Your son also needs to be tested and evaluated for these. It's still pretty early, so proper treatment now could bring about resolution of symptoms after a few months (hopefully) of treatment, although everyone is different.

You can post on 'Seeking a Doctor' and include your region and that you're looking for a pediatric doctor. I go to a great LLMD here in NJ, but it's best if you get a pediatric LLMD.

WELCOME To LYMENET

Here's more goodys! A typical response to newcomers.

Hi and WELCOME! Get a LLMD or at least Dr that is willing to learn about lyme. Borrelia Burgdorferi is a clinical diagnosis, based on symptoms and on your response to treatment. Good Luck, bumpy road ahead.

Post for a LLMD in Seeking a Doctor. Ps remember I am not a Dr, just a fellow sufferer.
