I am in a panic! Me and my 18 month old son were both diagnosed with lyme (I also have babesia and erlichia, but my son does not). I know I've had these infections for 5 years as I remember the bulls eye rash and flu during the summer of 2003. I give this disease to my son congenitally or through breastfeeding. I am so scared! Is this for life for us now? Or can we eliminate these infections and never have to worry about them again? Does anyone have anything encouraging that their LLMD told them? Do the experts say this is curable or does it have to be treated for a lifetime? Please help! Why does it seem like no one really agrees? I've read of people saying that chronic lyme is curable and others seem to believe it's not. What's the truth?

Nobody seems to know for sure if you can get rid of it entirely. Don't stress too much about that. Many doctors do say that complete cure is possible. The point is you will be able to get better.
The thing is, most people on this site are here because they still are treating lyme. Once people get all better, they just check in once in a great while. So you won't hear much from the cured people, but you'll hear about them.
Once you get good lyme treatment, your immune system will either knock it out entirely, or do a pretty good job keeping it under control.
We do know that many people treat lyme, and then get better and never have to deal with it ever again.
I'm sorry that you and your son have lyme. It's no fun to have or to treat. But you can both get better, now that you know you have it.
So many people never figure out what the problem is, so they can't get better. You know what this is, so you can both get well.
Make sure you find a lyme specialist (LLMD), ok? Regular doctors don't know enough about this, so they don't do a good job helping. You can post in the seeking a doctor section.
Best wishes to you both. Hang in there!

Bejoy,
Thank you for your response and your kind words. You truly have helped to ease my mind a bit. I don't know what I'd do without all of you here on lymenet. You're like family.

Lymer, lots of people do well with treatment. It might not be curable, strictly speaking, but even without treatment it can go dormant for years at a time and people live normal lives. Eventually it may take its toll but that can be a long time.
My LLMD says it is very curable. He has researched LD for 30 years, so he should know!

It is not known whether or not you can ever completely
eliminate the pathogen, but getting symptom free
and staying that way is very possible.

I also think it depends on how you define curable.
To me I would consider it "cured" if my body was able to throw this Disease into remission and it stayed there.
Many ppl have seen their symptoms go away completely. Now whether or not the Lyme is still in there somewhere we don't know, but as long as it never comes back out, I would call that cured.
Good luck to you all!!!

Yes. A lot of factors come into play for each individual however.
