A few days ago, I posted about my BIL finding an engorged tick on his skin. I gave him the recommendations from all of you, which were great (re: 200mg Doxy for x # of days)
Well, the DUCK!!!! told him he doesn't have Lyme!!!! BIL believes him! Doesn't matter what has happened to me.
How on earth can a DUCK know if he has Lyme or not? He can't possibly know! He says, he doesn't have a bullseye, so he doesn't have Lyme.
The DUCK didn't test the tick! 40% of people don't ever get a bullseye. BIL has a rash, btw. WE all know if you wait until you have flu-like symptoms, you've missed your window of opportunity for early treatment and the best possible outcome.
Oh, how I hate DUCKS who mislead people. I live in a hot zone for ticks and May is Lyme awareness month! Looks like this Duck is a complete birdbrain!!!!
What can I send him to educate him????? The DUCK is probably a closed-minded birdbrain!
Where's the alligator thread? I want to throw this DUCK into it!

I would highlight the last section: "Rationale for Treating Tick Bites" pages 32-33. Put a big star by the last paragraph.
Put a tab on page 17: "Antibiotic Choices & Doses"
Tab on page 19: "Treatment Categories" Put a star beside "Tick Bites" and "Early Localized"
Another suggestion - At www.ilads.org Click "Brochures" on the left.
Print the 2 "What You Need To Know..." brochures. They contain excellent info; concise & easy to read.
Not sure about the attention span of a Duck, but the brochures are a "quick read".

Try another duck... this one is too stupid and too stubborn. To go back is a waste of money and MUCH more aggravation.
AFTER you get help.. THEN go back and bust his chops with good literature... or a base ball bat!
This is heartfelt, from me to your brother-in-law:
In 1989 I had crescent-shaped rash that developed after a tick bite. It was pink, with a wider red, rough, hot spot in the middle. Shaped sort of like this:
~~~*~~~ except, curved.
I didn't know what it was. I didn't get sick enough to seek help for a year, and then I still didn't know what it was. I took antibiotics for what we thought was bronchitis, but I didn't take enough antibiotics and I've never been the same.
Today, I am sick sick sick. I may never get well.
Does he want to take the chance? How does he feel about Russian roulette?
(You must be very frustrated. It's not much comfort, knowing you're right when you can't fix things.)
Out of the 11 people in my family who have lyme 4 got a rash.
My son got a bulleye rash right in frontof my face when we went to Conn. for my LLMD appt. He didn't get bit by a tick either.... It was some sort of a flying insect. But he had a perfect bulleye. This was a re-infection also.
From what my LLMD said, I guess he was finding that only people who were re-infected actually get a bullseye rash. I think they are still doing the research on this.
Also I agree with Tincup, go to another duck that will at least give doxy or something. Keep trying.
The first rash I recall was during my first pregnancy, at least ten years after the bite!
I actually showed another small one on my neck to a duck a few years ago and he was clueless. I didn't know much about Lyme then, (pre-dx) but thought it might quailfy as a bulls eye rash (it did!).
GRRRRR WOW - I thought it was just STANDARD to treat for Lyme with a known tick bite. Why in the world would a doc not write a rx against the possibility of lyme? Now THAT is negligent.
But you know, I had a bullseye plain as day and the dermatologist sent me home with cortizone cream. I knew nothing about Lyme and bought his "insect bite" dx.
Ducks are ducks are ducks. I'm so disgusted with them that I have a hard time even having faith in my llmd.
Sure hope your bil takes control and gets himself treated by someone. For education, I would forget the literature and protocols.
Do this instead: take an estimated total cost for YOUR health care for however long you've had sx and then the estimated cost of Doxy for a couple months (mine is $10 a month).
Most people will believe MONEY, even when they don't believe anything else. Heck, most people will believe money over their doctor's word, too!
Also, remind BIL that you don't buy car insurance AFTER the wreck, but as a safeguard against it. Once he's a wreck, he'll wish he'd "bought" the Lyme insurance!
Best of luck Sarah L.
