Quick note- I have an appointment with a neurosurgeon today following an abnormal spinal MRI.
LLMD has seen the report and feels that physical therapy will be sufficient-that's what I am praying for.

Carol
I didnt want to go on this appointment "alone" which I is why I posted- now I feel like a have a whole host of friends with me. [Smile]

Be careful with Neuroducks! They love steroids & know little how they effect Lymies.

Many spinal problems can be treated without surgery. If you do get a recommendation for surgery, consider seeing a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist for a second opinion. There are mahy good rehab programs out there, like the MacKensie (sp?) protocol, which has helped many avoid surgery.

I used to manage medical care on workers' comp cases for insurance companies, and I typically saw overall better results on the ones who made lifestyle changes and had specialized therapies. I probably worked on 250 cases which involved back injuries, and got a good overview of what works and what doesn't.

Of course, there are some spinal problems which do require surgery, especially if there is bowel and bladder dysfunction or a risk of paralysis. Each case is different. Neurosurgeons typically recommend surgery because that is what they do. Also avoid steroids if offered. Very bad for Lyme.

Be sure to take a tape recorder to tape what is said to relisten to later, and I do hope a close relative/friend WITHOUT LYME MIND can go with you to hear things & ask more questions you can't think of.

Good luck; I wish you the best. I'll think of you today as I'm driving out of state for my LLMD appt. for tomorrow. Bettyg [group hug] [kiss]

If he says surgery definitely get a second opinion. They told me last year my spine was the cause of all my numbness, tingling etc...I had surgery which set this disease off like a wildfire. Come to find, per 3 different doctors, I never needed the surgery to begin with.

I also was told to see a surgeon about my back troubles, based on less than compelling reasons on mri and xrays. Didn't do it, and found that treatment for lyme helped tremendously.

Like someone else said, sometimes it is necessary, but sometimes not. And back surgeries don't have a good track record.

Michelle M -I'm through with my appointment- how about Coldstone Ice Cream Parlor????? No surgery for me [woohoo]

Next week I have an appointment with an orthopedic guy.

There was a woman in the waiting room complaining that there were no magazines to read-so I pulled out a Guidepost and offered it to her-she seemed glad to get it, and I told her to keep it.

So Michelle- I"m anxious to hear how your appointment went? And what's your favorite flavor ice cream? I have to eat bananas by order of my LLMD- so I think I will get a banana split !

Later,
Much gratitude to all,
Carol

Darn, sorry I missed this...I could have gone and had ice cream later..But you know I have body parts that seem to get in the way..Ha..

Later, and we will do ice cream after lunch if I have time....You can take a probiotic and a nystatin or something but the ice cream stays.

Heck, we can do ice cream and forget lunch..Or can I tempt you with a birthday margarita? A liquid lunch in Bal'more..Yeah!!! WEll, I can dream, can't I?..lmt.

Just in case anyone was wondering???????

Saw an orthopedic doc today about my back- best possible outcome for me- gave me a script for a back brace, soft support type belt, and script for Physical Therapy.

Now the neurosurgeon said physical therapy could do more harm than good- but I prefer to take the advice of the orthodpedic doc with the model of a spine who looked at the the MRI in his office with me.

Me Jane, You Tarzan-
I am woman, hear me roar,

Carol,as someone above stated,DONT let them give you steroids.Even after my back operation i told the surheon no steriods. They gave me the shots,we they stappled me up.He said i know you told me,but its procedure. My lower back hurt for years, and the lyme treatment resolved it,burning,pain,etc..BUT i blew a disc walking to the bathroom one morning, surgery was the only option.
