There is a thread on this subject but I really just wanted to point your attention to information on what you can do to help heal the gut. The question was, should you do this or that first? You can do them both. Healing Leakiy Gut is crutial and should be done ASAP.

A really important aid in helping you to heal is diegetive enzymes. Here is a link to a whole topic on Enzymes. They serve a two fold purpose and one of them is to heal Leaky Gut. Leaky gut allows all kinds of crap to enter your blood stream by way of holes in the lining of your stomach, not good.

Hope this helps: Look for the Cure/Digestive Enzymes for Leaky Gut

Jelly,

I have always read that digestive enzymes should not be taken if you have gastritis?

They always make hubby's stomach hurt worse at those times even when he takes them with food.

I have leaky gut and when I took pancreatic enzymes on my own my stomach hurt too. I stopped immediately.

I have just begun working with a new doctor and yesterday he did bloodwork that confirmed I have leaky gut. My blood looked terrible.

First thing he did was put me on digestive enzymes because I'm not processing protein well. I am wondering if my stomach will react again and hoping that it doesn't.

My body is at a point where it isn't accepting any treatment well. I herx badly on all lyme meds and antifungal meds. Even herbs and even stuff I have historically taken without problems.

This blood test showed bacteria and parasites and two forms of yeast are in my blood. My wbc were moving so slow they almost weren't moving.

Dr says I'm too sick to even attempt chelation yet. He wants to get all this cleared up.

I have been on a restrictive diet for 2 mths which really helped with my gut and my yeast. I can't imagine what this blood would have looked like two months ago.

Having the enzymes hurt your stomach is a problem some encounter. Some have managed to make it through by using small amounts WITH food for the time being. At least that way food will begin to digest, instead of sit there in your stomach and rot, causing the tiny holes in your stomach and leaking into your blood stream. We tend to not digest food for various reasons, one being lack of stomach acid according to my LLMD. It can actually make your stomach hurt like you have to much acid, who would have thought. I used to get so sick to my stomach with lunch still sitting in my stomach 10 hours later.

Also there are a few options you can try, different enyzymes. You can get them as singles and try them individually. If you get a complex, there might be one that is the offeneder. That way if you try seperately you can wean out the problems. You might consider starting with a real simple enzyme like Papaya first, work up slowly.

Luv, the stuff your doc found in your blood stream is exactly the problem, and the crap doesn't belong there. The enzymes will actually consume that stuff if you are taking the right ones. Remember that there are different enzymes that digest different things. We really need the enzymes that digest protiens.

Getting well is going to take time. Go Slow. Instead of taking no enzymes, take the tiniest amount your stomach can tolerate with food. I have very little doubt that over months and maybe even years you will be able to take all of the enzymes you need. I know you want to be well tomorrow or sooner, but it likely took years for you body to end up as messed up as we tend to be. Give it years in your schedule to find it's way back to healthy. Takes quite some time for all the cells in your boddy to regenerate, and I figure it will take many cycles of that.

Hi Jelly,

Thanks for your input. You sound like you have knowledge in this area.

I am taking enzymes prescribed by the doctor. I'm taking them with food and just began so too soon to tell if I'm going to tolerate them.

I sure was shocked to see all that stuff swimming around in my blood.

L-glutamine is one of the supplements the doctor has prescribed as are probiotics (Ultra Flora)

I tried Diflucan in February and the bone pain it produced drove me to the ground. Since I have successfully taken Diflucan many times in the past, I can only believe the yeast is in my joints. I have found supporting articles of this on the net.

So the good news of that may be that when we kill the yeast in my blood stream and heal the leaks in my gut, maybe my rheumatoid arthritis will go away! ?

When i had leaky gut I took Similase digestive enzymes from Tyler Encap.L-Glutamine, 2 caps in between meals, Permeability Factors it was called, probiotics, and a full food allergy panel to avoid the reactions and heal ther leaky gut. After a year of this protocol and the allergy free diet, i was doing amazing! it lasted too!!

Wildcondor,

You must go to my doctor. That is exactly the protocol he has me on.

Also on another post you said "until the leaky gut is healed, you will not be able to tolerate any meds for Lyme and coinfections". You are 100% right as far as I am concerned. The simplest things give me a major herx.

Some digestive enzymes have HCL in them.
I started having burning and gas when I took them.

I started taking Megazymes which do not have HCL in them and did well on them.
Some people do not need the HCL, so anyone having problem, check what is in your enzyme formula

I also take Metagenics Glutagenics powder to heal the leaky gut. It works really well

I am one of those that the digestive enzymes bother my stomach. Then someone mentioned Prevail Acid-Ease. I found I could tolerate them. After a bottle of those I was able to graduate to a more potent digestive enzyme and tolerate it.

HI,

Thanks for this!! My Dr. wanted me on enzymes, too, but I have not been able to tolerate them.

I'm taking L Glutamine, altho even those tablets seem to irritate things (even hypo-allergenic suspensions!)

The best thing seems to be the Metagenics Ultra InflamX protein powder/drink, with L-Glutamine, molybdenum, quercetin and other things in it.

I wonder if that is similar to the Metagenics powder mentioned above. (?)

OK, what I REALLY want to know is.... does it take a whole year to be feeling better??? [Frown]

I have been at this not quite a month and not doing well at all yet. I was still hoping to keep my professional life, which has been sadly on hold.... also I can't imagine continuing to put my family thru what they've gone thru this month.

ALSO, what did people do re. the terrible swings of blood sugar and hypoglycemia? Is anyone else eating 7-8 small meals a day??

And I wonder how soon one can attack the candida aggressively? "All" I'm doing for it right now is taking probiotics (Pharmax powder) and proper diet (NO sugar, low carbs, etc).

I definitely need some encouraging words about this condition. I did a real number with mega-doses of NSAIDS plus abx w/o any detoxing supplements.... sigh...

Thank you all so much for your help.

Melanie, if you are reading this, I was going to email you privately to ask how you got better in more detail....

I'm reading everything I can find.
I heard there is a book on leaky gut by a Liz Pinksy (published 1998). I have been reading her other book re. digestive health and have been impressed.

(((Thank you))) all so much.

WHAT has helped me was Wholesale Nutritions C-Salts.

That is simply Vitamin C with an effervescent, along with Zinc, Potassium, etc.. The effervescent takes care of about 94% of the problems of taking ascorbic acid. And of course Vitamin C in large doses of about 3000 to 4000mg a day is indicated for Lyme Disease.

The abx really kills your stomach. It did mine. The C-Salts along with many herbs, and such things as Milk THistle, Acidophilus, Sarsaparilla, and Red Root all helped me.

I was in terrible pain and nausea for about two weeks before taking herbs. Then the abx made it even worse. BUT NOW I have very few problems with my stomach.

Well, ED THAT statement you just made is NOT true at all.

MAYBE you need to branch out a little Like I did.

Get the book, HEALING LYME, by Stephen Harrod Buhner, and you will find exactly WHAT I posted in there, plain as the nose on your face. [Smile]

Check it out, you may just be glad you did.

I have lived with leaky gut for almost 5 years now, it took 4 of those years to figure out what it is. i took every product under the sun to try and cure the yeast part of it. diflucan is not bad, but using nilstat was better, it travels through the lymphs better and gets to areas that diflucan doesn't seem to be able to reach. i have been using l-glutamine and glucosomine, but i am allergic to prawns and glucosomine has shellfish extract in it. i am about to start using a product called perm a vite, but want to know if anyone else has tried it and what the verdict is. i have a hugely bloated out belly and the glucosomine is suppose to be helping that, is there anything else that can subdue the bloating. the info in this forum has been helpful. thank you to everyone who's taken the time to post here.

I have had stomach issues as well with taking enzymes. I found one through my doc that is working great. I had to work up to three capsules just before every meal, slowly. It is the digestive enzymes from Kirkman -- used primarily with autism.
