Any suggestions as to what probiotic is the best? And where can I get it?

Right now I am just on doxycycline.

I really like Dr. Ohhira's

It's capsules of a fermented paste that chock full of some huge number of good guys.

I've been on abx for 1 year with no yeast issues and I attribute it to Dr. Ohhira's and diet.

Another Theralac fan.

The one and only thing recommended by my LLMD, who carries and recommends NO supplements except this.

Do you have to order Theralac online?

I've been using Metagenics' UltraFlora, which is what my LLMD recommends and sells in his office. I'm inclined to continue using the UltraFlora because of the convenience (another doctor's office really close to me sells Metagenics products).

For variety, I sometimes take Bio-K plus instead. It is supposed to be high-caliber too and is actually available in stores.

Hi everyone,

The problem with Theralac is that it's expensive and must usually be shipped. Poor people can't deal with that.

Poor folk: There are other brands.

Hi Lea,

I use Renew Life, Ultra Flora Critical Care, 50 Billion, with 10 strains of bacteria. You take one at bedtime. The good stuff needs to be refrigerated.

For killing yeast I would suggest either oregano tablets 3-4 a day or some people swear by Olive Leaf extract. You can check with your healthfood store for these products.

To keep yeast under check you might want to use this regimen:

1) acidophilus with many strains to put good bacteria back in
2) kill the yeast, oregano or other
3) Change diet to low carb & sugars
4) For serious yeast problems other abx available

Good luck! [hi]

we use ultra flor critical care (50 billion)

our llmd recommended taking the probiotic about
2 hours after your abx

timing is important - you cannot take the probiotic with the abx - it would be a waste of
time and $$

I take mine 2x day

what you may want to find is a reputable health
food store

an all natural probiotic is what I would recommend

you will find them in the refrigerated section
of the store - find one you like then you can
order online

you really should not be on abx treatment w/o
the probiotics

One other crucial aspect of a good probiotic design is the "delivery system." If the payload is properly protected from somach acid, then it can be safely delivered to the intestine -- where it is needed.

This is an area where most probiotics fail; this is why some of the better ones like Theralac are thought to be more effective than many others.

My personal fav. (the one that helped my son - salmonella infection and one week later post op abx. literally destroyed nearly all of the friendly bacteria) is Essential Formulas.

It is not cheap.

He took loading doses:

5 capsules all at once, with a full glass of water (to dilute the stomach acids) one hour before breakfast and

one hour before dinner.

$60 = one week loading dose supply.

It worked.

My favorite is O'hirra's. This probiotic replicates every half hour for 8 hours based on the prebiotic paste. It starts at only about 1 billion organism, but that 1 billion doubles based on the paste every 1/2 hour for 8 hours. So what started as a single tablet of 1 billion becomes enourmous army of friendlies.
