I am just curious if anyone else has experienced this...

I have a high tolerance for pain. As a zookeeper, I have been bitten by a hyena, as a vet tech I have been mauled by dogs, I have been in car accidents, I have debilitating late-stage Lyme, I've had spinal taps, abdominal surgery, etc...I can deal with pain without blinking an eye. However, my colonoscopy was SO painful that my husband heard me SCREAMING all the way in the lobby. He demanded to go in, and I really scared him because he had never seen me in so much pain.

My endoscopy was no big deal- I immediately went shopping afterward! But the colonoscopy was absolutely traumatic.

I was given one injection of fentanyl (IV) before the procedure, but it didn't phase me what-so-ever. I kept screaming for more but nothing worked.

My results were normal other than excess gas and spastic intestines that move food through too quickly, causing inflammation and rectal bleeding. (I defecate undigested food.)

Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced this?

Sorry you went through so much with your colonoscopy. I had a lot of pain through mine but probably because I had no pain killer. I'm mystified as to why the pain killer didn't work for you. Hopefully someone else will come by with more information.

Inflammation can cause pain so if your colon is inflammed that could cause pain.

Are you taking an acid suppresser? My food came out undigested when I was taking an acid supresser for reflux. My doctor told me it shouldn't cause that problem but when I stopped the medication, the problem resolved.

If you get no reasonable answers from the allopathic community, I'd see a qualified Naturopathic Doctor if I were in your situation. A full work up for allergies, stomach acid, digestive enzymes, infections etc. might prove very helpful.

Maybe your food is being moved too fast through your system to be fully digested? Digestive enzymes taken with your food might help?

I hope you get this figured out.

I had a similar experience. Had 2 doses if fentanyl - they couldn't understand why I was still awake.

Did nothing for the pain and I was awake enough to call it off two thirds of the way done.

Next time, ask for propofol. It's a short acting anesthetic and when it wears off, you'll feel refreshed.

I had my 1st colonoscopy in December. I was given the IV med and they started the procedure. I was basically awake. I started to have a lot of pain (I'm also very pain tolerant), and I was given a 2nd dose. I was OK for awhile and then I had the really bad pain again. They gave me the 3rd dose and procedure was done shortly after.

Once the procedure was done, they took me back to my room and said I could go home. My husband was surprised that they called him back so soon. We stopped for lunch on the way home. I did take a nap that afternoon.

Didn't they give you versed or something similar as well .. to knock you out?

I'm a wuss, because I won't do it without being knocked out.

They did give me the meds but they didn't work very well. I might have fallen asleep if I didn't have any pain.

I was not tired one bit- only got the fentanyl for pain. They physically held me down to finish because I was screaming and writhing so much. I am a little angry with hindsight. They told me I would be loopy and out of it...I felt more sober than ever. I feel like it is similar to having a dental procedure with inadequate drugs but they don't believe the drugs were inadequate. I was screaming STOP NOW PLEASE STOP NO NO NO for 30min straight while they held me down. Finally my husband made them stop. I am ****ed now.

yikes!! fentanyl alone for colonoscopy?? for that kind of procedure they would usually use a mix to form concious sedation..not just fentanyl..that is a med used for pain (i take that now for lyme pain as 3 day patch!!) cant believe they would not have given with other meds as you need to be loopy for them to do the procedure..that is not a nice procedure to have to have done and only given that as a med is very scary to hear...soooo sorry that you had to edure that...might want to do some of your own research on common/protocol use of anastetic for colonoscopy practices??? i know is hindsite but...hate for anyone else to suffer that

i didn't read all this but years ago they tried to do one on my twice when i was awake and i screamed so much they stopped and later put me to sleep for it

the doc said i had a congenital deformity where the intestine takes that right angle turn

i always have pain after from spasms(ibs)

but the last time they gave me tons of meds-versed and fentynal iv i think-and i had an easier time for the first 12 hrs but was very sore for a week after
