Hello,

This is probably the most benign question I have ever asked?

Can one chew sugarless gum? It has "sugar alcohol" in it. I don't know what that is.

I haven't been chewing it because I didn't want to promote yeast.

Thoughts?

Kathy

The sugar alcohol in gums - [correcting previous statement here thanks to Lymetoo] probably should be avoided.

--

Be sure to AVOID even a trace of aspartame/Nutrasweet/Equal. That is toxic to the nerve cells. Check all your labels as it's added to a lot of things, even cough drops.

Stevia is a good choice, from plants.

Since Lyme and Co's I have not been able to chew sugarless gum.

It makes me feel real sick, but if you don't feel sick chewing it, then go for it!

Hi, any thoughts on Splenda? I see Nutrasweet/aspartame mentioned; can we have Splenda?

Artificial sweeteners are bad for you and can bring on severe neurological problems even in the ordinary population, among other things. Stay

away from these things. They are made in a laboratory for the purposes of making $$$ and profits not to help YOU or make you healthy.

And, they mess with your blood sugar just the same as sugar does. Stevia and Xylitol are better choices.

Splenda is the WORST. Just another marketing campaign to fool the public. It's chlorinated sugar.

We tend to use Steevia in this household now. It is a sweetner from a plant in paraguay.

None of the stigma that goes with the other artificial sweetners.

Sugar alcohols INDEED feed yeast!!! I found out the hard way and my ND confirmed to me that it feeds yeast.

The amount in one piece of gum per day MAY not be enough to worry about, but eating sugar free candies, cookies, and ice cream IS.

ABXnomore is right. Those are all CHEMICALS.

They have also been reported to kill good bacteria in the gut, which then allows the bad to grow.

I'd just as soon ingest scorpion venom as aspartame. Do a google search--it should be classified as a chemical weapon.

Agave rocks even more IMO. Can be purchased at vitacost for way less than at health food store.

It comes from a cactus plant and tastes awesome.

feelfit... You don't think it feeds yeast? Sounds too sweet to me. What gives with that one?

I haven't had a problem. No yeasties in 17 months. It is the nectar of the cactus though. The glycemic index is good and recommended for use in diabetics.

I only use it in my morning tea...and sometimes a glass of iced tea.

Agave is very tasty and great because it is in liquid form and is low on the gylcemic index but if you compare the calorie count to sugar it has way more calories.

It think it is almost impossible not to have yeast issues (systemic), not the feminine kind, while on ABX or even not on ABX unless you eat a strict low carb no yeast diet. Agave WILL feed yeast, it's a carbohydrate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agave_syrup

It's not good for diabetics either, unless they are borderline and even then they should use it sparingly. That's just another marketing hoax.

I need calories. Yeast, no thank you. Don't know how good the tests are for systemic yeast, but mine just came out good.

I do diflucan l pill week. after having done one month straight. I do expect to have a bout with it at anytime now.

Lymetoo,

Thanks for the correction. I must have assumed sugar alcohols were okay because one L MD who uses cholestyramine has patients take sorbitol to avoid constipation.

thanks for the info. I have corrected my statement.

--

Yes, Splenda is very bad, too. Stevia, from plants is best.

In defense of xylitol, a sugar alcohol, it is a natural substance derived from birch trees and other sources. Does not raise blood sugar, has 40% of the calories of sugar. Another interesting point is that xylitol is bacteriostatic, which would seem to be a good thing for Lyme patients.

Mannitol, another sugar alcohol, has properties which allow the blood-brain barrier to be more permeable, like to antibiotics. Another good thing, I would think.

Both xylitol and mannitol are found in sugar-free gums, including nicotine gum.
