My backyard is wooded and FULL of ticks. I have to check my dogs every 1-2 hours.

I find ticks on mmyself every day -- i am really horrified.

Has anyone any knowledge of this product?

try Tempo SC. It is derived from Geranium flowers last I knew. It is so NOT toxic it is labeled for indoors and inside food PROCESSING plants and returants.

Supposed best price is at THIS site.

Says $44.25 for 8 ounces which is alot.(free shipping to boot) Might last you a year or two or more.
You mix 8-16 ml into a gallon of water and spray as needed,

NO smell,no chemical odor ever. Smells like spraying pure water to ME!!(But I have been accused of a broken smeller!!)

I have heard of dimacious earth but have NEVER used it.

Mostly used in organic grain handling situations.

I never quite understood how it worked.

I am curious also. I have a bag here but am told that you must wear a mask and gloves.

It is made from crushed up diatoms. Tiny ocean organisms with skeletons of sharp points.

The points pierce the exoskeletons of insects and worms and kills them.

Well....it sounds a bit scary to me!

I mean, asbestos is 'natural' and also has sharp projections but we all know what can happen from asbestos exposure.

Anyone an expert on the use of this stuff??

i didn't know it kills worms -- that's not good.

sizzled, is it so sharp that my dogs can't walk on it?

wonder why you have to wear a mask if it is safe enough to feed livestock??

just don, thanks! that product sounds good. but for some reason my computer can't read pdf files so i couldn't read the label....computer illiterate.

I just ordered an herbal collar for my dog that has geranium oil in it, so that should give me an idea if the geranium oil is effective at all.

I think it used to be used, " in the old days" in chicken yards. Not sure how or why..I bought some a couple of years ago when I read it was good at killing ticks.

I then read the cautions and have not used it yet. I think it is benign unless you breath it. lmt

you can use diatomaceous earth on your lawns and mix it in your dogs feed to kill parasites.

it just has to be FOOD GRADE, the bag i bought was from www.randallburkey.com for my chickens. but yes you can use it in feed for dogs. i have even heard of people mixing it in water & drinking it to kill parasites(only food grade)

it says on the bag,it is for parasite control, chickens fed DE have no odor and flies will not hatch in the droppings.

from what i understand about it, the parasites and worms ingest it, and they basically dehydrate, the DE cuts thier insides up and they cant retain any water.

if your having a yard full of ticks, you might try getting some guineas, they eat the crap outta ticks!! we have had them for over a year now. and i havent found a tick on my dogs in that time.

haven't used it on me yet,but

thanks, all, for the feedback. very interesting.

don't chickens eat little stones anyhow? it amazes me that dogs can eat that stuff and not get sick.

jessie, wish i could have guineas, but our resident owls and hawks would see to their swift demise, alas. not to mention my mischievious dogs and the neighbor's roaming cat.

i feed my chickens oystershell & grit, it helps the gizzard grind thier food so they will be fat & happy:)

on the bag i bought it gives your the amount to take in water for Humans as well,i haven't got that Brave yet. they also have some DE with grapeseed & flax in it too.

my dogs are fine & so are the chicks.

Know what you mean about the Owls, they get mine at night when they are roosting in the trees.
i just keep adding to the flock, lol.

sizzled, i don't know how long it's been in use.

I'd like to know if it ever decomposes, or is it good for years -- I mean provided no chickens eat it LOL.

jessie, how far does a bag go? does it cover very much turf -- i guess if it kills worms i wouldn't want to put it in my garden?

I just ordered some Damminix tick tubes -- they promise to eliminate by 90 percent the number of ticks. anybody know if they work?

I just read where DE is the real ingredient in Comet or Ajax cleaner with a few smelly good things added for good measure.

I guess we have all used it,,and just didnt know it.

Anybody want to TRY this? Sprinkle a little Ajax or Comet where you see bugs,,see if they are still there in a day or two???

That's interesting, Just Don. I thought it was pumice inside of the Ajax or Comet .

Might be easier to sprinkle...hmmmm. [Smile]

I'm not sure of that, LMtoo.
I mean, pumice is from a stone?

And the diatoms have sharp projections (from marine skeletons)?
