HI Everyone,

I am attaching our 9th Annual Lyme Walk Press Release for you to send out to the community and your family and friends. We are really working hard to bring awareness to the public an provide an inspirational message to all those suffering. Please participate if you can by sharing this event and attending.

We have also created a face book page for the walk facebook.com/sdlymewalk

If you do not feel well enough to attend, it is a PERFECT opportunity to ask someone to WALK ON YOUR BEHALF.

Ask them to make a poster up that says " I am walking for ____ because they are too sick from lyme disease to walk " or something along those lines.

Hope to see you all there!

Take care,

Maritza

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

April 27, 2015

9th Annual San Diego Lyme Disease Awareness Walk to be held Saturday, May 16 in Mission Bay

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (April 27, 2015) -- The San Diego Lyme Disease Support Group announces the 9th annual Lyme Disease Awareness Walk and 5k, which will be held Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ski Beach in Mission Bay. The event is designed to raise awareness of and support for those with Lyme disease in southern California. Patients, physicians and authors will be present at the event to spread knowledge about this growing epidemic.

Featured speakers include:

Dr. Therese Yang, Medical Director and President of Dr. Yang’s Family Care

Dr. Nicola McFadzean, N.D., author of The Lyme Diet and The Beginner’s Guide to Lyme Disease

This year’s Walk will include an untimed 5k, in addition to a one-mile walk/Fun Run along a flat, easy course. Those unable to walk are encouraged to attend; spectators may bring lawn chairs and blankets to sit in a large, grassy area along the course. Leashed pets are welcome.

Local businesses Edge on Mobile, Business in Bloom and Plant People are sponsoring the event, which takes place during Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Several gluten-free and paleo food options will be available, including O Organic Food Truck. Additionally, health and wellness vendors will be on hand to distribute information regarding Lyme Disease.

Participants and spectators are encouraged to wear lime green and carry signs to raise awareness of Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. As part of the Lyme Disease Challenge, a grassroots awareness campaign that began in March, attendees can participate in a group photo to “take a bite out of Lyme disease.”

Registration will take place on May 16 from 10-10:30 a.m., and the walk will begin at 11 a.m. The registration fee is $5 for Lyme disease patients and $10 for the general public. Children under 10 are admitted free. The registration fee may be used for tax purposes and includes a reusable tote bag and awareness bracelet.

Proceeds from the Walk will benefit Dr. Yang’s Family Care, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit medical practice dedicated to providing integrated, comprehensive, quality medical care to the community’s underserved population, especially those suffering from chronic illnesses including Lyme disease and its co-infections.

Dr. Yang says about 75 percent of her patients have Lyme and co-infections. “There’s a common misconception that there is no Lyme disease in California,” she says. “But it’s here.” She says it’s important to get treatment as soon as symptoms begin, and many patients do recover. However, long-term treatment is sometimes necessary -- and that’s a message she will share at the Walk.

“Patients with Lyme need to know that there’s hope, and they need to meet others who’ve been through the devastation and gotten well,” she says.

Event organizer Maritza Padgett hopes the Walk will continue to raise awareness. “Informing the public about Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses is essential to curbing this growing epidemic,” she says.

Dr. McFadzean agrees. “It’s fantastic that there is increasing Lyme awareness in San Diego. I'm excited to be a part of this event and know that it will reach and help many people.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that Lyme disease is the fastest-growing, vector-borne, infectious disease in the United States, infecting more than 300,000 people each year. Most commonly thought to be transmitted through the bite of a tick, Lyme causes multiple symptoms and is often misdiagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and a number of autoimmune and neurological conditions.

Fewer than 50 percent of Lyme patients recall a tick bite or tell-tale rash. The common screening test misses 35 percent of culture-proven Lyme disease, and some studies indicate up to 50 percent of the patients tested for Lyme receive false negative results. There are no tests currently available to prove that the organism is eradicated from the body.
