I know people here have been helped with Levaquin, but everyone needs to be very careful while taking it.
My mom was put on Cipro for seven days for a urinary infection. On the third day she started having leg pain in her muscles. She finished the seven days of Cipro with legs still hurting.
The day after getting off seven days of Cipro she got a bad respiratory flu. Her doctor put her on ten days of Levaquin.
I threw a fit and said her legs are hurting from Cipro!!!!! Doctor said pneumonia could be far worse then leg pain. Her legs got way, way worse on Levaquin. After 6 days of it she could no longer walk and was taking presciption pain meds for the pain. Doctor switched her to Zithro after six days.
She is now in a nursing home with severe weakness and pain in her legs!! My family and her doctors wouldn't listen to me.
They are now saying though that they think it was the Levaquin! She was in the hopsital for 4 days on neuro floor and they ruled that it was not neuro.
My mom could walk before Levaquin. It takes two people to carry her to the bathroom now!! She has had to move into a nursing home and no one knows if she will recover from this.
So be very careful if you are taking Cipro or Levaquin!!!!

That's horrible! I have stated to all doctors and hospitals that I am "allergic" to quinolones. Not exactly true, but I had increased nerve pain from one of the quinolones and I refuse to take any more.

Her new doctor said there is a bunch of stuff written about how that class of antibiotics can damage you but she couldnt find much on recovery. Scary stuff!! Hope and pray she gets better!

i took cipro in the beginning for several weeks. my legs got so sore i could not even climb steps so i stopped on my own.
so far no damage. the doctor insisted that it was not the cipro but i new differently.
i would say for some people it is deadly, for others it's ok. it's hard to say.

I think the fact that she's 76 didn't help. I thought I read that people over 60 were at a higher risk for problems. Think if they had just stopped it right away when the pain and weakness started she would of been ok.

That's how my mom's started. First she just got sore. Then after about a week she was extremely painful and weak in her legs.

Sorry to be responding so late to your post. I showed this thread to my wife who has severe chemical sensitivities and is allergic to nearly all antibiotics and this was her response.
Ask the lister to seek assistance from an environmental medicine specialist who uses the Rinkel technique. A good place to start is the American Academy of Environmental Medicine to locate a doc in your area. This may be reversibe by this method.

I also tell them I am allergic to the quinolones. Levaquin screwed up the tendon in my left heel, and took a year to recover, but I did recover.
They put me on it in the hospital for a kidney infection. I was very sick, so maybe the trade-off was worth it. But I sure wouldn't take it again.
What is the alternative to this class of drug for kidney and UTI infection anyway? I am also allergic to every abx that I know of.

I had horrible pain all over my body after 4 weeks of Levaquin, could hardly walk. Also neurological problems, couldn't tolerate food, chemical smells, not even my perfume.
This diminished over weeks and months. After 1 year I was well exept intolerance of almost all antibiotics.

I am really sorry this happened to her. I got tendonitis from it. I was in pain for 8 months.
Finally I ordered a supplement called Rapid Response and the pain was gone the first night. I normally do not recommend commercial products but when you are in that much pain, it might be worth the try.
It clearly states that side effects are much more common in elderly people. She should never have been given Cipro and then to give her Levaquin on top of that was unbelievably negligent.
There are class action lawsuits against the makers of levaquin.

My mom hasn't gotten any better. It's only been a month and she is 76, so I'm thinking it could take months to see any improvements.
She is very upset. She went from walking fine, to not being able to walk at all within about a week. Her legs hurt really bad and give out when she tries to walk.
I'm glad that people can get better over time!!

That Rinkle technique sounds intriguing.
I had achilles pain from less than 2 levaquin pills, and even my llmd didn't believe me because I didn't even reach "blood level" at that point. Took about 7-8 months to go away.
