My LLMD has been treating me for the past five months for babesia. My current antibitoics are mepron, clindamycin, zithromax. I'm also taking artemesian.
Before treating the Babs, we knocked out baronella primarily with levaquin.
Now my bart is beginning to come back (per my Fry test). Yeaaaa! She suggested that I add Rifampin to my medications to treat the bartonella.
However my pharmacist warned me that Rifampin will decrease the effectiveness of the Mepron. See warning below. Rifampin: Coadministration of rifampin and MEPRON Suspension results in a significant decrease in average steady- state plasma atovaquone concentrations. Alternatives to rifampin should be considered during the course of PCP treatment with MEPRON.
I took Levaquin from 10/10 to 3/22/10 1 at night along with Tindamax. It cleared up my bartonella almost completely (until now). I had no negative side effects. Is it ok to take Levaquin instead of the Rifampin (along with mepron and zithro)?
What is the best antibiotic treatment for bart and babs? Please help!!
My current list of meds is detailed below:
1) Prilosec OTC 2) Cortef - taking cortef 10 mg in am and 5 mg in pm 3) Progesterone cream days 14 28 take (200 mg per ml). 6) Mepron Began taking 5/1 every other day. Began taking every day on 5/15. 7) Artemisia Began 4/27 twice per day (200mg) with 8 oz grapefruit juice 8) Armour Thyroid (1.50 grains) 9) Plaquenil 10/10 to current 2 per day 10) Clindamycin 10/12 to current. (Taking 4 5 per day with water) 11) Zithromax 8/3/09 - 10/10/09, 2/26/10 to current 12) Heparin shots 10/18 to current (twice per day).

He is using factive rather than levaquin. Factive is a newer med from the same family as levaquin and cipro. I like that I only have to take 1 pill once a day.
It was rough at first but after a about 1.5 months of this I started having better days.

I've muddled this over today..... I think my LLMD's thoughts are that my anxiety and emotional state are so high right now with bart, that there is no way that she can irradicate babs or any other bugs for that matter. I mean mentally - my stress level is off the hook!
And Rifampin is supposed to give bart a good kick in the a@@. So even if the Mepron is a little less effective, think I see why she may have chosen this treatment.
Thanks for your response. :-)

Does anyone know if you can take Flagyl (1000mg every day) Zithromax (500mg every day) and Rifampin together? That way I can work on Bart AND lyme at the same time?

Rifampin increases the enzymes i liver P450 and in that way decreases the concentration of a big number of meds.
Azithromycin and factive or levaquin should not take them together they often cause rhythm disturbances of the heart and death.
When you are on Azithromycin(erythromycin.claritromycin) and won to change to levaquin ore same group with levaquin you have to stop azithro and wait 10 days for azythro to clear from the body and then start levaquin or any fluoroqinolone.
The side effects mention above are rare from 1 in 1000-30000patients but you don't want to be that one.
Erithromycin ,claritromycin inhibit some enzymes that degrade meds in liver and can increase very high levels on blood of some meds.
In this group azythromycin does not increase ore decrease the enzymes or levels of the other meds.
