I've never been able to tolerate cholestyramine in the past, even at pretty small doses like 1/4 packet per day.
I'm currently trying the compounded CSM, which I was told is easier to tolerate, but I'm struggling even more than previous attempts.
Is it possible to be unable to tolerate just 1/4 tsp per day? This dose is only 1/2 gram! But each time I've tried, I feel like the living dead after just 2 doses! I don't feel it right away, but then wake up feeling horrendous the next day...like a CSM hangover.
It seems crazy to feel THAT bad after just 2 tiny doses! Does this mean I'm really toxic and need to buck up and push through? My experience is I continue getting increasingly worse - bone crushing fatigue and brain fog, total cognitive collapse, perception issues like depersonalization, and eventually I get pretty depressed too.
I'm currently also battling candida (Nystatin is kicking my butt, so the candida is probably quite bad?), and all the fun other stuff that cropped up with my leaky gut.
Does CSM help to heal a leaky gut?
I'd think CSM would be a bad idea for someone already struggling with severe bloating and constipation???
Any ideas???

- Do not use Cholestyramine if you are constipated.
It could be dangerous and result in blockage. Suggestions below on how to move things along, so to speak.
Is what you are using JUST cholestyramine? Nothing else added at all?
I tried and tried pure cholestyramine- several times, over time - also with the pure compounded pharmacy formula. Still, I had severe neuro reactions.
Part of that may have been from the way Cholestyramine just takes out all the good minerals, too. I suffered severely with a decrease in the good minerals.
I just had to take a different approach. Smilax is the best in my book. It can be a bit rough if too much is taken as it will produce some belly cramping and loose stools but at low dose, and then gradually increasing, I never had that side-effects. Smilax also provides some key nutrients, rather than taking them all away.
Guggul (also a resin similar to cholestyramine but much easier for me) -- apple pectin, carob powder, sarsarparilla (smilax) -- chlorella, Salvia miltiorrhiza, flax seed meal - all endotoxin binders that do work very well for me. I have rotated from time to time.
However, if you are constipated, you should not be taking ANY binders until your bowels are moving again. Smilax, though, while binding endotoxins, will not cause constipation.
Have you been drinking enough water? Getting enough fiber from your food (lots of vegetables, whole grains like Quinoa) ?
You may need lots more MAGNESIUM (in divided doses), up to the point of loose bowels but then more water, more fiber from whole foods. You likely need much more dietary fiber.
Have you been getting enough probiotics - away from the Cholestyramine?
Have you been getting some exercise? Non-aerobic exercise is vital to get the gut moving. Walking, gentle bouncing, massage, warm bath (not hot), yoga stretches, PT/Balance Ball . . . all helpful.
Good luck. -
