this Wed.

The day before clear-liquid diet is tough. Should I avoid jello because of sugar content?

Any ideas besides chicken broth and jello?

I always use sugar-free jello. I know it's not good for us.. but neither is all the sugar!!

I can't think of anything to eat besides what you suggested.

You scared me with your subject title!!

I "ate" clear broth, home made sugar free jello (from geletin) with a little clear juice in it for flavor, boullion, caffeine free tea, lots of water. The doctor said I could have Gatorade type drinks, too.

Good luck with your colonoscopy!

My doctor told me not to eat red or orange jello because of the color. Apparently it makes them wonder why the colon is that color.

No red colors at all in the jellos or drinks.

Buy some G2 .. it has less sugar.

INEBG.. That is a great idea to make your own jello. Why didn't I think of that!? What did you put in it for flavor? I guess the G2 would work??

Are you going for the "knocked-out" or awake-but-groggy version?
I chose the latter but found the doc plowed right thru the procedure (oo-ow!) & made me wish I'd opted for the sleep-thru version.
All clear though.
And went right to the restaurant for breakfast.

Neither regular nor sugar free jello is good for us but I think, for just one day where fasting is required, the regular is far safer than the sugar free for a couple of reasons. Our brain needs the glucose, so does our liver. Aspartame can trigger serious reactions.

You should still be able to take probiotics as they dissolve into a clear liquid. What is not clear mostly dissolves in the mouth and is not likely to "create stool" or interfer with the procedure. While it's a horrible concoction of high fructose corn syrup, Ensure is allowed as it does not "create stool" - so a little probiotics powder stirred into water the day before is likely just fine.

The reason that fasting can be dangerous and that some form of carbohydrate is needed is described in the "Secondary Porphyria" post here:

No choice given...knocked-out.

What is G2?

I have ElectroMix by Alacer Corp. I use this daily for elctrolytes.

As far as probiotics....I use VSL #3 DS powder. Will I be able to take it several times that day? I mix it in water now, and it looks quite milky, not really clear.

That is a good electrolyte mix.

If you roll around the probiotic liquid in your mouth, it will all be absorbed into your tongue, etc. There will be no solid food parts to make their way to your colon.

The ElectroMix would be better than G2. G2 is a type of Gatorade that contains less sugar... or at least some of them do.

You probably can't drink the VSL the day before or the day of. Keebler's idea should help.

Knocked out version is the only way to go!! [Smile]

jennie, just in case you've not heard it before, "the Big C" is a slag term for cancer. So, if you use that term around others and they react strongly, you'll know.

When I made my own jello (because I will not eat artificial color/sweetener/flavor) I added in a little clear apple juice which is sweet enough and flavorful enough to give the stuff some semblance of edibility. But then, I am not picky about how things taste, so that may not be suitable for everyone. Good idea above to add the sports drink; that would taste more like jello.

It also helped me to freeze things (like the drinks and the jello) to give me something to chew. More satisfying than simply ingesting liquids.

I had the colonoscopy in "twilight" mode, whatever that is. They gave me amnesia medication, too, so if I suffered I don't remember it at all. I don't even remember getting dressed after the procedure.

We went straight to a restaurant where I pigged out, grateful that we were at a booth (with nobody behind us) and there was loud music in there because I was filled with gas from the procedure, gigantic amounts of gas. Felt much better once we'd left the restaurant; full and empty in all the right places.

OMG! I am so sorry, I had no idea...didn't even think of cancer when I posted. My sincerest apologies. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Thanks for the heads up!

I also have MegaFlora probiotic caps. Would that be better to use instead of VSL liquid?

Just had mine a few weeks ago.

Hint on helping drinking the mixture the night before....
Have a banana popcicle on hand. "Shave" off a few bites of it with your teeth when drinking your mixture. It helps get it down after the first 4 glasses or so.
One popcicle helped me get like 5 glasses down. Not much each time, but the little ice particles helped with each glup.

Lyme, Babs, Fry Bug..... Whatever it is, may a treatment be discovered to make us all whole again!
