When I was young (8yrs old)I experienced a bad Penicillin allergy, fast forward 30 yrs and have NEVER used the drug again.

Now having Lyme, my llmd sent me for Allergy testing scratch test for penncillin, (My llmd would like to use Rocephin down the road)

Allergist said that I passed the test, but would have to come to her office while I took a penicillin med to watch for reaction.

Instead of jumping right to IV Penicillin, I asked if I could use a 3rd generation drug that has some penicillin in it.... like Ceftin!

They agreed to add Ceftin to Zith. However, I am nervous about taking the ceftin in case of reaction...

Has anyone passed Penicillin scratch test, and used penciillin? OR outgrew an antibiotic allergy?

has anyone tried this combo before....Zith 500mg and Ceftin 500mg 2xday

Yes. As a kid I could not take penicillin - got a skin reaction - but, like you, passed the scratch test a while back & used Bicillin and Ceftin with no problem

allergies change. Not uncommon at all. I was once allergic to penciillin as well. I recently did 3 months of 3000mg of amoxy a day with no ill effects.

Starting out small could never hurt, but you pretty much covered it with the allergy test.

If allergic to penicillin, it does not necessarily mean you will be to Rocephin, or other cephalosporins.

See here:

look at Table 2.

I am allergic to ampicillin and did just fine on Rocephin.

Others' comments are very reassuring. If it helps you feel better, rather than start with an IV, do a test shot of rocephin in the doctor's office at your next appointment. Go from there.

Of all the drugs, I hear rocephin can help the most with neuro-lyme, especially as an IV.

You would have to arrange in advance with your LLMD for a shot during your next appointment, though. It has to be mixed and they may not have the vial on hand to do so.
