The more salt I seem to consume...the calmer my heart seems to be and the lesser my symptoms. It seems to help considerably.

How does salt effect Lyme/co-infections?

Could be a number of things, but here's one quote:

"In most cases of adrenal fatigue, salt (in moderation) benefits those who add it to their diet. Unless you are one of the rare people with adrenal fatigue and high blood pressure, add some salt to your food. A sea salt or Celtic salt is preferred, as these are the kinds containing the valuable nutrients. Some of the symptoms of adrenal fatigue are actually caused by your body's needs for salt."

http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/health-tips/diet-for-adrenal-fatigue.html

Some claim it is effective against parasites as well.

P.S. Just an added point. It is very common for Lyme disease sufferers to have adrenal and/or some kind of endocrine system problems -- if you didn't know.

I totally agree with what Wolfed Out posted. I've had various adrenal system symptoms (like POTS, which could have symptoms that feel like 'racing heart'), and once I figured that out, it's been really obvious that adding extra salt to my diet helped the symptoms. I went to an LLMD after I'd figured out the salt issue and he told me that would have also been his recommendation for the problems I was suspecting.

I think this is the main reason why patients who do the salt/c thing sometimes feel better, and that it doesn't actually do anything about infection itself other than being a supportive therapy.

I've also done adrenal support in other ways (like low-dose cortef and various supplements) and all of that made some of my symptoms improve.

I have been doing the salt/c protocol for 4 yrs and it literally saved my life. Sea salt is an antibacterial and antiparasitic.

It puts parasites/worms into osmotic shock and they scramble to leave the body. As has been posted here, both sea salt and vitamin c are important for the adrenals. Also check out

My body craves salt. I never connected the two...

Wonder if I should get tested for adrenal stuff...

Ditto Wolfed Out and Maria.

Adding salt to your diet can be beneficial to those with POTS (for more info, check out potsplace.com) or adrenal dysfunction. Certainly your mention of heart symptoms fits these issues, and you can check out your other symptoms as well.

Both of these conditions are common in the world of chronic infection and Lyme.

I have both - and am on a high salt diet per doc's orders.

At times I have slacked off on supplementing with salt - and felt the consequences fairly quickly. Major increase in symptoms!

Please consider a high quality salt source - Real Salt is a good one.

And do read up on POTS and Adrenal issues.

Oh, and renny... before I was diagnosed with both of these issues, I craved salt constantly. Getting diagnosed was helpful because I learned why, and about better sources of salt. Also - getting on meds for the POTS and adrenal issues helped decrease the cravings.
