Yep that's what they said.

I want to make sure my family keeps safe, after all I got lyme, Bart H. from my cat that had fleas.

To appease me they are "looking into" a way my cat can be tested.

Has anyone any info on a panel that can do done?
like a 5 in 1 panel testing all the big ones?

Individually the tests would be very expensive.

Lastly anyone have at their finger tips research and cases of lyme in cats that I can present to my vet.

The ignorance just kills me.

PS.. My last cat had to be put to sleep 8mo after I pulled an engorged tick off her. She lost weight, was depressed, and eventually lost the ability to eat or drink. If I had known better i would of had her tested.

I was just researching this today. Lots of information at these sites. If you think it came from fleas or saliva... most likely Bartonella - IMO.

Thanks Momlyme.

The vet office called me back. It's like they don't have a clue. Asked me tons of questions like what would you do if it did have lyme? Would you get rid of it?

I'm like no... I'd treat it.

Then she goes on to say "well there's lot of false positives. Most cats test positive and carry antibodies but never have the disease."

Yeah I've heard that before.

So glad my Bart is gone cuz if it was active I'd of lost it with the vet. My kids warned me to be nice and I was. [Smile]

I went through something similar with my dog... when she first went to the vet, she wouldn't stand up or walk. She would cry if you touched her. I thought she had broken her hip because it seemed to be mostly in her rear legs. She wouldn't even get up to eat or drink.

They did a Lyme test (tests for other things too - I think worms) She tested positive and they sent me away with 21 days of 100 mg doxy (for a 10 pound dog) and pain killers. She was better within a day.

When she finished the doxy, she went right back to limping and then not walking. I called the vet and they told me they were going to prescribe an arthritis medicine. I said no... I think she needs more doxy. They said 3 weeks doxy is adequate treatment. She does not have lyme it must be arthritis.

She is only 3 years old. I refused the medication.

I went to a naturopath veterinarian. She prescribed 3 more weeks doxy, accupuncture and chinese herbs for intestinal support. (She also throws up when she is lame)

She just finished her 3rd round of doxy and she is sick again. I am looking for other options.

She does find relief from symptoms with accupuncture. I want her to get rid of the infection... I believe she has bartonella and it is not going away with multiple courses of the doxy.

Good luck with your cat. What part of NY are you from? Send me a PM if you want a good naturopath vet.

I was a vet tech for ten years in mass. Never once had tested a ct for lyme. I have never seen a panel for it either. I do think cats get it though.

Actaully, any animal can be "innoculated" with spirochetes of the Borrelia Burgdorferi sprecies, by an Ixodes tick, to give a common method.
But whether the 'ketes survive & flourish is highly dependant on the animal in question.

Might I remind you that the common grey squirrel here in New England has never been shown to "contract" Lyme, that is, come down with any symptoms or problems, even though they can be bitten by deer ticks, as they are on occasion.

There's also ample evidence that we humans can be "infected" by many spirochetes that end up not finding a suitable host in us.
As an example, the strain of Lyme that affects birds in Ireland seems to do nothing when humans are exposed to it.

A strange life form indeed, borrelia.

My kitten had TBDs. Found her half-starved, ticks attached to her (face!), fever, lethargic..on my back porch.

Vet put her on amoxicillin for several weeks with probiotics. She is well today!!!

I live in a TBD endemic area!!!

It is hard to determine symptoms in cats. There was a test for Bartonella Hensalae....I will try and find that info!

P.S.
Someone had thrown her away and she ended up on my porch. She is a loving house-cat today!

awww I love kitties too.

Currently I have a stray kitten we are doctoring for tapes and lung worm. Panacure was given but she is still throwing up and has increased respirations at rest and underweight.

My other kitty is 5yo. Depressed and walks like she's walking on eggshells. It's been about 5 mo sence her last tick.

Last cat died 8mo after her tick attachment.

When I find out panel for testing I'll let you know.

My vet said the same thing, cats don't get lyme. I had mine tested for ehrlichia, bart and RMSF. It was some sort of tick bite panel. My cat had scratched and bit my daughter so I needed to know what he had, if anything. He tested negative for all.

My cat is grumpy, i.e. if you pet him when he doesn't want you to, he'll bite you. Also, he throws up after he eats. Seems like he throws up everyday. Occasionally he'll pee in the kitchen sink. Argh...
