As part of my treatment, I stick to a strict sugar free & gluten free diet. In recent months, I've been feeling so much better and I'm hopeful about possible recovery. If I get to a point where I no longer take ABX can I return to a regular diet? Will resuming a regular diet put me at risk for my symptoms returning?
Thanks - K

- A "regular" diet or a "healthful" way of eating? When you are better you will have a little more leeway but my guess is that you will want to continue enjoying foods that make you feel better and best serve the cells of your body.
I don't feel at all as if I'm on a diet. I have devised a very nice nutritional plan and I enjoy many good foods. But nothing at all like 80% of the packaged foods from my youth. And I'm better for leaving all that behind. I can't imagine going back there.
You should get checked for genetic celiac, though. If not genetic, you may be able to enjoy gluten grains several times a week. Americans consume far too much gluten, though, so 3 - 5 times a day is not good for anyone.
And the most sugar a normal person should have per day is just 25 grams. For comparison, one ounce of 85% dark chocolate has about 6 grams. So, yes, in moderation and wisdom, you will likely be able to enjoy a bit more freedom.
When lyme improves, often allergies do, too. Do check out:

I am healthy and I eat a regular diet. By regular I certainly don't mean the average American diet!!!
I never eat fast food, ewww. I make all my meals from scratch unless we're eating out, which we did tonight. I had chicken marsala, angel hair pasta, a side salad and a glass of wine. I don't like sweets, so no dessert.
I drink lattes in the morning, but I usually make them myself and use a good quality, organic, non-homogenized milk.
I don't eat a bunch of junk food.
I had to eat gluten free when I was sick, but now I tolerate gluten just fine. I still don't eat it every day. I still mostly eat sprouted grains like Ezekiel Bread because they're better for me.
I eat healthy because I want to BE healthy. I don't think it's good for anyone, sick or well, to eat what most people eat. But I do consider my diet to be pretty normal these days, just not a lot of processed food.

Well, for sure.. I would continue taking probiotics .. perhaps indefinitely.
I think an overall healthy diet is a very good idea... I STILL have trouble with intestinal yeast and if I cheat too much or don't take enough probiotics, I'm back in trouble. (as I am right now)
I've been off abx for 6 yrs! Eat healthy and don't overdo it on carbs or sugars.

After I got rid of lyme and company, my doctor restored my gut for 30 days and then I was free to eat whatever I wanted.
That was over 5 1/2 years ago. I rarely drink and I don't smoke. I think these are the 2 most important things you can do to maintain your health.
You don't have to eat sugar-free once you are no longer taking meds because it is the meds that cause us to get candida from the sugar in our diet. Get rid of the meds and candida is no longer a problem.
But, notice that my doc made me stay sugar-free for 1 month past the date I stopped meds. In that month he treated me for yeast and I took Florestor. All that ensured that my gut was back to normal before I began eating normally again.
And, you should be able to eat gluten without any problems also. Although some people find they are gluten-intolerant. I don't know if the lyme caused that or they always were.

Lyme Too - Curious about why you would recommend probiotics indefinitely. Is this for everyone's good health or for Lymies in remission?

I've been eating low carb, gluten-free for over five years. Doing that and certain supplements have kept me functional. I'm so used to it now and there are so many wonderful healthy foods to eat that I don't think I'll ever return to the SAD (Standard American Diet) of grains and suger.

Well, it's been true for me. I think my gut still needs them. I also think they are good for anyone's health. Probiotics help form a first line of defense for the gut. Our intestinal tract needs to be healthy in order to ward off disease of any kind.
And if you have to take abx for anything else later, DON'T BE CAUGHT WITHOUT ADEQUATE PROBIOTICS!

I expect to be able to eat normally when I'm done with treatment. By Normal I mean, healthy but with no restrictions on carbs, sugars, etc, other than what I'd like to restrict to be healty (i.e. no / little fast food, etc.)
I truely believe the diet during treatment is primarily due to trying to prevent yeast when on abx.
I also will enjoy a glass of wine or so from time to time.
