I had a spect scan last friday and results are as follows:

Moderate, global, cortical hypoperfusion with heterogeneity. This perfusion pattern is consisten with encephalitis or vasculitis such as from infections (eg Lyme disease), autoimmune causes or secondary to medications.

Anyone with similar results? It doesn't sound good but my LLMD ensures me that this is often seen in lyme patients. I've been treated with only orals for the last 6 months but since these results, my doc wants me to start more aggressive treatment. Most likely will start with bicillin shots in January.

Lyme IgM: +31, +34, +41, 23-25 and 83-93 are Indeterminate.

Currently taking Oral Biaxin and Bicillin Injections.

lpass,

I've been wanting to get this done, but I went to my regular GP and she didn't even know where I could get a SPECT test done; insisted I see an endocrinologist.

Endocrinologist doesn't think I need this, or an ultrasound. Go figure...

What really hit me was your 3rd paragraph. I'm in the same position you are. Only orals for almost a year now. Backing off Rifampin, symptoms are returning quick. I wonder if I need something to suggest more aggressive treatment like you.

Yes, those were my spect results....back in 2005. I'm guessing yours was done at Columbia, as mine was.

Just know that viral infections can also cause spect scans like that...so yes, you could have lyme or viral infections or both.

I've been helped by both antibiotics and antivirals.

Best, Timaca

Why do we need the spect scan? The EEG and the thermagram together can show almost the same results - and are not radioactive?

I had that in 2005 and 2006. On antibiotics for years just stopped in August, couldn't do them anymore. Cat scan in May showed lesions. Doing herbals now. Good luck.

karenl:
I had the spect scan done because I've had this weird head wooziness which refuses to go away. I don't think everyone needs it.

Wolfed out:
My LLMD thinks I need the more aggressive treatment to clear up the brain issues. My other symptoms seem to have cleared with just the orals.

Timaca:
Yes, mine was also done at Columbia. What kind of antivirals did you take? Just curious.

lyme in putnam:
Good luck with the herbals! I did zhang's protocol for 4 months and do think they help.

I had high antibody titers to HHV-6 and EBV so I was on valcyte for 9 months. I am still on acyclovir.

I'm also on oxymatrine (which is a Chinese herb) to battle Coxsackie B, as I have high antibody titers to that too.

Best, Timaca

I know mine said 'areas of absent perfusion'?....something like that. I'd have to look. I have a bart rash, too.

I had one pre diagnosis after an "abnormal" MRI. Mine showed definite areas of low blood flow. but it wasn't a pattern they recognized. I believe the summary was "diversely profuse spect scan with no recognized pattern."
