My predominant Lyme symptom (for 30 years) has been severe unrelenting upper back and neck pain.

After 2 1/2 years of no improvement on oral abx my LLMD put me on IV Rocephin in July.

On most of the orals I had mild, flu-like herxes for about four days.

Since I started the Rocephin in July, I never had a noticable herx. But my pain level has been consistantly up for the last three or so months to the point where I'm really having a hard time tolerating it.

My LLMD started me on Neurontin (Gabapentin) for the pain. I am working up to the full dose, but I can barely function. It helps some with the pain for a day or two, then stops until I up the dose.

Anyway, I started wondering if this increased pain for so long could be a sign that the Rocephin is working. Would a herx last this long?

I know it can take a while for the Rocephin to work, but should I be feeling anything in the meantime? I do have a full protocol of herbals, detox and other things on board. We will start IV Garlic soon too.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

It took 4 months for the rocephin to start working for me but I think it is a miracle drug. I am up and moving around now. Stick with it if you can.

yes, back pain is the disease and herx, I don't believe roceph alone is the wonder drug and believe in homeopathy/nutritional support a must. read july townsendletter.com

I"m not a doctor either. but I am in the health field and have seen many, many, many people not get well on iv roceph alone.

Rocephin is the only abx I am on currently, but i and am on several herbals and nutritional support.

No homeopathics right now, but I have been in the past and assume I will be again.

I am also trying to recover from a mold exposure in our house this past summer.

I took IV rocephin for 4 months and it made me so sick I wanted to die. I begged my husband to pull out my picc line and he did. I have had severe back, neck and head pain. It's all lyme symptoms. I think it will till more treatment with other antibiotics too, supplements, rest, proper diet and anything else that your doctor recommends. Remember that our lyme disease in each person is different and at different degrees. Our bodies all respond differently to different meds and what works for me or anyone else may not work for you. Also know that you get worse before you get better. Hang in there and stay positive. I believe lyme is a physical and emotional battle. Hange in there and don't worry. This takes time.

Oh, I am very patient. I have been at this for thirty years (chronic back pain).

We are going to add IV Garlic soon.

I'm just wondering why my pain is getting worse and if it could be the Rocephin at work.

We haven't treated my bart much. I take Bar-1 by Healthy Directions. I've taken Tindamax (isn't that for cyst form?) and so many other orals. I tried Rifampin, but the herx was more than I could handle.

I talked to the PA at the LLMD's office and she said that the increase in pain was more likely a sign of insufficient detox than herxing.

It makes sense, since I have the HLA genetic predisposition to have difficulty detoxing. Also, I've been doing so much cholestyramine to try and overcome mold biotoxins that I think I've let the other portions of my detox protocol lapse.

She said sauna was the absolute best thing to aid, peet baths were another suggestion.

I had stopped saunas when I got my PICC, but she okayed me to start again and get my dressing changed more often, so I'm going to give that a try.

I'll ask about Bart and IV Clarithromycin at my next appt.

I think you should ask for babesia treatment , it does cause back and neck pain. Have you tested for it? Remember that when abx don't seem to work you have to suspect co infections, and chances are 70% you have babs...
