Just had my second LLMD visit today and he suggests a two month heavy metal detox using Chlorella tablets and cilantro tincture through biopureus.com.

Very expensive $100 for the Chlorella tablets.

Is there anyone out there who can recommend a brand they like.

I hate to spend so much money if it doesn't agree w/ me.

Swanson's "Kyoto" line seems to be fairly high quality that is affordable. Its certainly above most typical brands. Not sure if it stacks up to BioPure or not since I've not really spent a lot of time comparing the two, but from a cursory glance they seem the same - both are the type with "cracked" cell walls.

I use the Swanson. Years ago I used Sun Chlorella $150

http://sunchlorellausa.com/shop/category/23-gold-club.aspx#

I have found that the Kyoto brand is just as good.
It is a bargain at $36.

Swanson has great customer service. You can also speak with a product specialist if you need one. I have been using them for years and have never been let down. They even have a 1 year money back guarantee.

You can return the unused portion (as long as it is not empty) if you are not satisfied with the product.

Free book to read:

http://www.chlorellafactor.com

The short story, it's a super food. It may or may not bind to some metals and help them out of the body. Read the book. Do your own research.

You are in germany! You may be able to get the micronized chlorella...
http://bit.ly/djVOme

We can't get that in the U.S.

I forgot to mention, if you go the Swanson route, you can buy both Kyoto Chlorella itself and the Chlorella Growth Factor tablets which are even more bioavailable and concentrated. Both of them together have overlapping benefits.

The Biopure brand uses sound to crack the walls. Others use a mechinical process, which heats up and possibly denatures the chlorella, or chemicals. Anyone know what process is used for the Kyoto brand?

Last I read the process listed (it was in an in-print protocol) it was a heat-free process but the full data isn't listed on the item page. Next I order I'll talk to them and see if I can get the full data.

Edit: From a Swanson Health Library question...

"Swanson Kyoto Brand Chlorella is processed using an advanced jet-spray pulverizing process to break open the plant's tough cell wall while maintaining the nutritional content. Independent studies by the Japanese Food Hygiene Association show the digestibility of Swanson Kyoto Brand Chlorella to be 83%, considered to be among the best in the industry."

Yakema Chlorella was only 15 for 300 tablets online and works great. I think the Japense forms are suppose to be the best.

I am still not sure when you take them? Some say take 5 half hour before each meal? SOme say they interfer with nutrients..if anyone had the right way to use them, please post.

Here are some of my aging notes on Chlorella:

3. Chlorella:
Both C.pyrenoidosa (better absorption of toxins, but harder to digest) and
C.vulgaris (higher CGF content see below, easier to digest, less metal
absorbing capability) are available. A peer-review literature list is available from
BioPure.

Be aware that there are huge differences in quality. We only
recommend BioPure chlorella.

Chlorella has multiple published health inducing effects:

Antiviral (especially effective against the cytomegaly virus from the herpes
family)
Toxin binding (mucopolysaccharide membrane) all known toxic metals,
environmental toxins such as dioxin and others
Repairs and activates the bodys detoxification functions:
 Dramatically increases intra-cellular reduced glutathion,
Sporopollein is as effective as cholestyramin in binding neurotoxins and
more effective in binding toxic metals then any other natural substance
found.
Various peptides restore coeruloplasmin and metallothioneine,
Lipids (12.4 %) alpha-and gamma-linoleic acid help to balance the increased
intake of fish oil during our detox program and are necessary for a multitude
of functions, including formation of their peroxisomes.
Methyl-cobalamine is food for the nervous system, restores damaged
neurons and has its own detoxifying effect.

Chlorella growth factor helps the body detoxify itself in a yet not understood
profound way. It appears that over millions of years chlorella has developed
specific detoxifying proteins and peptides for every existing toxic metal.
The porphyrins in chlorophyll have their own strong metal binding effect.
Chlorophyll also activates the PPAR-receptor on the nucleus of the cell
which is responsible for the transcription of DNA and coding the formation
of the peroxisomes (see fish oil), opening of the cell wall (unknown
mechanism) which is necessary for all detox procedures, normalizes insulin
resistance and much more.

Medical drugs that activate the PPAR receptor
(such as pioglitazone) have been effective in the treatment of breast and prostate cancer.

Super nutrient: 50-60% amino acid content, ideal nutrient for vegetarians,
methylcobolamin - the most easily absorbed and utilized form of B12, B6,
minerals, chlorophyll, beta carotene etc.

 Immune system strengthening
 Restores bowel flora
 Digestive aid (bulking agent)
Alkalinizing agent (important for patients with malignancies)

Dosage: start with 1 gram (=4 tablets) 3-4 times/day. This is the standard
maintenance dosage for grown ups for the 6-24 months of active detox. During
the more active phase of the detox (every 2-4 weeks for 1 week), whenever
cilantro is given, the dose can be increased to 3 grams 3-4 times per day (1 week
on, 2-4 weeks back down to the maintenance dosage).

Take 30 minutes before the main meals and at bedtime. This way chlorella is exactly in that portion of the small intestine where the bile squirts into the gut at the beginning of the
meal, carrying with it toxic metals and other toxic waste. These are bound by
the chlorella cell wall and carried out via the digestive tract.

When amalgam fillings are removed, the higher dose should be given for 2 days before and 2-5 days after the procedure (the more fillings are removed, the longer the higher dose should be given).

No cilantro should be given around the
time of dental work. During this time we do not want to mobilize deeply stored
metals in addition to the expected new exposure.

If you take Vitamin C during your detox program, take it as far away from Chlorella as possible (best after meals).

Side effects:

most side effects reflect the toxic effect of the mobilized metals which are shuttled through the organism. This problem is instantly avoided by
significantly increasing the chlorella dosage, not by reducing it, which would worsen the problem (small chlorella doses mobilize more metals then are bound in the gut, large chlorella doses bind more toxins then are mobilized).

Some people have problems digesting the cell membrane of chlorella. The enzyme
cellulase resolves this problem. Cellulase is available in many health food stores
in digestive enzyme products. Taking chlorella together with food also helps in
some cases, even though it is less effective that way.

C.vulgaris has a thinner cell wall and is better tolerated by people with digestive problems.

Some manufacturers have created cell wall free chlorella extracts (NDF, PCA) which
are very expensive, less effective - but easily absorbed.

GiGI,

If I take glutamine, aloe leaf, D-licorice before bed(in powder form) - If I add chlorella or apple pectin will they simply neutralize bind to the above mentioned ingredients?

I know people say to take binders away from supplements - but it sounded like that was geared more towards minerals and vitamins. is it everything?

Canefan, I would not take Chlorella with pectin. Can't see any reason for it. Chlorella stands on its own. It's good to alternate binders.

Take care.

P.S. Canefan, did not see your Glutamin etc. post before I posted this. I can't answer because you have to have them all together in the mix to test and to see if beneficial. I doubt it. Look at licorice side effects and combinations with other products you are taking.
More is not better.

Some more on Chlorella:

Scientific Reports - most of them done in foreign countries. Plants cannot be patented.
Germany, University of Tuebingen did some research too with real humans and real poop - results great evidence it's working - could not be published and is resting in some governmental or pharmaceutical desk drawer.

There are literally thousands of reports on the research done on the use of chlorella - only put a few here. Many in Japan and other Asian countries.

Chlorella Strengthens the Immune System & Anti-tumor effects
Chlorella stimulates the activity of T-cells and macrophages (by increasing interferon levels) enhancing the immune system's ability to combat foreign invaders whether they are bacteria, viruses, chemicals or foreign proteins.

Chlorella extract (CGF) to treat patients whose immune systems were suppressed as a result of having brain tumors which were treated with surgery, radiation or Chemotherapy. Result showed that patients' immune systems remained at near normal levels and were less adversely affected by the Immunosuppressive treatments when chlorella was administered.
(Merchant, Rice & Young from the Medical College of Virginia, 1990 study.)

A study showed that mice treated with 10mg of Chlorella extract prior to introduction of Cytomegalovirus (A virus that cause many diseases, and cause serious illness in patients being treated with drugs that slow down the immune system.), have survived lethal infection, the chlorella increased the activity of interferon and saving the mice from death.
(Natural Immunology Cell Growth Regulation, Miyazaki Medical College Department of Microbiology.)

CGF stimulates the production of interferon, which is believed to slow the growth rate of cancer cells.
(Research at Kitazato Institute. )

Chlorella can stimulate the macrophages and T-cells of the immune system, resulting in an anti-tumor effect, probably due to the protection or restoration of macrophage activity, which is usually retarded in the body by the time tumors start to grow. Chlorella also decreased the side effects of chemotherapy --- there was far less damage to the immune system.
( A combined report of Kanazawa Medical University of Japan and Taipei Medical University at the Third International Congress at Reims, France in 1985.)

An extract of Chlorella showed remarkable life prolongation effects in mice bearing Sarcoma 180 (cancer cells) with a broad optimal dose range. The extract was said to be " A potent modifier of some biological response " , such as the cancer-killing ability of macrophage cells.
( A research by Dr. Kanki Komiyamas of Japan.)

The stimulation of tumoricidal peritoneal macrophages can be directly induced by peritoneal implantation of unicellular algae in humans.
( By Vermeil, C.; Morin, O.; Le-Bolic, L. of Arch Inst. Pasteur Tunis. Mar-Jun 62 (1-2): 91-94.)

Chlorella enhanced the growth of Lactobacillus in the human colon by fourfold in a standard growth medium. It evident that Chlorella promotes human colon health.
( A report by Dr. Takechi Y. Gakushu Kenku-sha, Tokyo, Japan. Nov. 30, 1970.)

Popular use of foods containing chlorophyll shows it helps cleanse the bloodstream, deodorize bad breath and body odor, deactivate carcinogenic substances and halt tooth decay. In addition, inflammatory conditions such as arthritis and stomach ulcers respond well to algae supplementation.
( " Healing with Whole Foods " by Paul Pitchford. (North Atlantic Books )

Human RNA/DNA production slows down progressively as people age, resulting in low levels of vitality and increased vulnerability to various diseases. When our RNA and DNA are in good repair and able to function most efficiently, our bodies are able to use nutrients more effectively, get rid of toxins and avoid disease. Cells are able to repair themselves and the energy level and vitality of the whole body is raised? Dr. Benjamin Frank is recommended a diet rich in nucleic acids to counter this "aging" process. Current laboratory analysis shows 3% RNA and 0.3% DNA in Chlorella which would make it one of the highest known food substances in nucleic acids.
( " The No-Aging Diet " by Dr. Benjamin Frank. )

Dr. Bernard Jensen and other researchers have proved that " The reports of treatment with Chlorella by Dr. Frank to his patients have regain energy and a more youthful appearance. In addition , long-standing problems with arthritis, memory loss and depression begin to abate. "
( " Chlorella - the sun-powered supernutrient and its beneficial properties " by William H. Lee, R. Ph., Ph.D. and Michael Rosenbaum, M.D. )

The Chlorella Growth Factors (CGF) contain richest sources of nucleic acids, which researchers believed that eating foods rich in nucleic acids will slow down the aging process. Experiments with laboratory mice have shown their life span can be extended by over 30% !, after fed with Chlorella.
( " Chlorella: Natural Medicinal Algae " by Dr. David Steenblock. )

Life Extending Effect of Chlorella --- a report showed that the life span of both diabetic and normal mice have increased 30%, after given Chlorella for feeding.
( Medical College of Kanazawa, Japan.)

Because Chlorophyll absorbs and inactivates toxic materials, people have traditionally taken algae for their high chlorophyll content.
( Ron Klatz, D.O., president of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine in Colorado Springs.)

In Japan, interest in chlorella has focused largely on its detoxifying properties - its ability to neutralize or remove poisonous substances from the body, including Cadmium, mercury-caused disease, dixon, PCBs, X-rays and other radiations.

A Report by Scottist in 1986 and report from Japan showed that increase absorption of Cadmium by Chlorella and increased excretion of Cadmium by threefold after intake of Chlorella from animal testing. Chlorella can also detoxify Uranium, Lead, Copper, PCB.
( " A good Health Guide: Chlorella " by William H Lee. R. Ph.D. and Michael Rosenbaum, M.D. )

Chlorella exhibited radioprotective action against Gamma-ray induced Chromosomal damage in mice. The Anti-mutagenic activity of chlorophyll and beta-carotene present in vegetable extracts is now well established.
( The Japan Radiation Research Society in 1993.)

Guinea pigs on a diet rich in chlorophyll showed increased resistance to lethal X-rays. ( U.S. Army report in 1950 .)

Chlorella has the unique property of picking up toxic substances and eliminating them out of the body. Chlorella cell walls absorb and hang onto lead.
( Report by Drs. D. Lorch and A. Weber )

Detoxifying of very harmful Chlorinated Hydrocarbon Insecticide, has been shown to be removed more than twice as fast from the body when chlorella is taken by mouth.
( Dr. S. Pore, of the School of Medicine, West Virginia University, 1984.)

Reports of " Effects of Chlorella on Levels of Cholesterol in Serum and Liver " showed that 16 patients were given 20 tablets of Chlorella daily for three months, without any anti-cholesterol drugs, their cholesterol levels had been significantly lowered.
( Research of Wakahisa Hospital of Fukuoka, Japan. )

Chlorella contains protein of " astonishingly high quality ", could prevent liver gangrene and suggested that people suffering from Kwashiorkor should be given protein made from Chlorella instead of protein from milk.

I was told to take 4 Chlorella tablets with each meal.

12 tablets 1/2 hr. before bed followed by a 4 oz glass of hot water w/ cilantro tincture.

Reason-heavy metal detox for 2 months, several times a year for lyme patients once a year for regular folks.

Has anyone had a negative reaction to Chlorella?

In researching I found in some people it caused severe nausea and stomach pain for several hours.

Binders won't really "mop up tinctures right?

If I took a tincture and waited 20-30 minutes I highly doubt a binder like chlorella, clays, or pectin would interfere with the tincture?
