I've been on IV Rocephin for 4 years now. I know, that sounds extremely long, I'm starting to feel a little self-conscious about telling people now. But to explain a little...I started at 50mg a day, because I couldn't tolerate any more than that. It's just been this last year that I've been up to 2 gms/day.
Anyway.... last week I had my first (and oh. my. gosh! I hope my ONLY) gall bladder attack. Lasted a couple of hours, went to the ER and it magically went away. Doc suspected gallstones, so did I ;-)
Next week I'll be going in for an abdominal ultrasound to check for gallstones.
Couple of questions,
first... has anyone else ever dealt with this... on Rocephin and then problems with gall bladder?
From what I've read, oftentimes if you discontinue the Rocephin, the gallstones will often resolve (eventually) because they are formed differently then the regular gall stones. The Rocephin binds with calcium and makes the stones versus the regular cholesterol stones.
I'm concerned about going off the Rocephin though, I've gone off before and have fallen down the hole so quickly.
Anyway, love to hear from people!

Yes, I have been on Actigall since the very beginning, maybe why I've been able to tolerate it this long, who knows?

You should consider the Olive Oil Lemon Drink. That bad boy can flush out a gallstone, and it's a lot less painful to your wallet and body compared to surgery.
Do a search for Olive Oil Lemon

I'm on IV Rocephine and Actigal as well and I thought I was having a gallbladder attack the other night. About 4 hours of stomach pain, nausea, bloating, back pain. Almost went to the ER myself.
My LLND has me doing monthly liver/gall bladder flushes, but I skipped last month. I'm not going to skip it again.
The first month I did it I got several stones out painlessly. She recommends 1 tsp. of malic acid daily for seven days previous (with stevia) instead of apple juice.
My next one starts tomorrow.

Yup, 4Seasons is right. That's what I've done, and it has worked well. Before I did them regularly with the rocephin, I had horrific nausea from GB sludging.

Just added this topic yesterday to MQ before seeing your Ouch gallbladder entry...
"Does anyone have any feedback on the following Treatment "protocol"????
RocephinIV- 6 weeks- 4 consecutive days starting with 2 grams for 2 weeks, 3 grams for weeks and 3/4, to finish with 4 grams weeks 5/6
Delursan 250 mg- 1am/1pm
Plaquenil 200 mg- 1 am/1pm
How well it was tolerated? Was it your first line of defense? Any other feedback about the Delursan or Plaq? Dietary tips? (although we are pretty gluten/sugar free to begin with)"
I thought I had most of my bases covered, but being new to this I had/still have no idea, yes, and as you all know gall bladder issues to think about.
My husband started his treatment today- first ever- and hmmmm? The flushes should be ideally done before, no? However I can NOT see him dealing with colonic stuff.
Perhaps olive oil lemon-thanks Metallic Blue.
My thoughts went as far as Mag, B complex, probiotics, alpha lipoeic acid, omegas, whole yogurt, gluten-free dietary concerns, etc....the basics I suppose?? I shall look into actigall as well.
Now I am worried (more worried) because his dosage seems pretty stiff compared to what I have read about others. Still waiting for more feedback!??
Good luck Desertlily!!
And thanks ALL for the gallstone eyeopener!
;-)

I'm considering the gall bladder flushes, (I've heard of them before) but after experiencing that attack, I can't imagine how it could be possible to pass the stones "painlessly".
I guess I just don't understand the physiology behind that, I'll do some research, I appreciate the input.
clueless: Like I said, I was someone that had to go extremely slow, but I am not the norm, I don't think. Hopefully others can tell you of their experiences on Rocephin. My two cents would be that at least the starting dose of Rocephin sounds reasonable, and to just see how you tolerate that. You know that you will probably herx, it'll be up to you to determine what is tolerable and what is not.
When you are fighting the bugs, your immune system kicks in and you start developing inflammation which in turn can cause a lot of your herxing symptoms. Too much inflammation is actually not too good for you and can get in the way of getting better. But this is something to work out with your LLMD.

I was on IV Rocephin for 4 months, when I started my gallbladder was clean.... 4 months later, after 2 attacks... I had to have it out as it was full of gallstones.
Sludging of the gallbladder... count me in as having it and now I do not have a gallbladder anymore.

hadlyme, were you on actigall or doing flushes?? Is this kind of thing common? i suppose GB sludging is.....Apparently according to our LLMD the Delursan has been prescribed exactly for that. anybody familiar with that one??
Very sorry for your gallblader, but perhaps you're better off without it! ;-)
Sorry, another Q: when did you start herxing after beginning Rocephin?? just wondering (and praying) what i will be up against (husband, that is)
Also food for thought, if you know of anyone? Roc IV has been recently demonstrated to be helpful in clinical episodes concerning relapsing-remitting and progressive Multiple Sclerosis and remission phases. (which my husband also has ;-((
ahhhhh the wonders of modern medicine, i think!!!
thanks for your feedback!!
wish other people would respond to my other post, patience, i know!!!!

I was not on anything else when on IV Roc.. I was being treated by my GP in MT with him being told things from Dr. H on the east coast.
No one was doing anything for the gallbladder back then (1999) that I can recall.
I don't know when I started herxing with it, as I was also starting to become allergic to it right away too.
We didn't know the difference on what a herx was compared to the rash and vomiting that I had with the IV's. Hm... after a 3 day drug allergy test (after gallbladder out) we found out I was allergic to Roc and it's cousins.
I was good for 8yrs after that IV Roc and another 1 1/2yrs of zith/mepron and all other drugs on Dr. B's protocol. Now back in treatment for over a year again... and NO IV's for me this time.
Maybe it was the strong IV Roc that kept me so good for so long? who knows.
I'm ok as I've never had to quit work through it all.

Hm.. good question. About 1 1/2yrs ago, felt crappy... and the crappy kept getting worse. I think a stressful event brought it back out of remission...
I had only been on B12 shots and magnisium and some Z paks throughout those 8 yrs. Was as normal as can be.... but whalaa.. it came back.
I had two years of hard treatment that first time.... now on a slower more gentle one.
I have Bab's more than anything.. and it's something I really don't think I'll get rid of, but control. I won't go that long without treatment again.
I know I'll live with this until I see the Pearly gates. Living as normal as I can is my goal, and really is achievable I feel.

i hope for you it's a brief, very brief revisit, and then off into the Arizona sunshine you go!
as my husband is also MS dx, I have done alot of reading and a lot of tricky neurological stuff is triggered by high-level stress events. I have also contact with others who fell off the damn wagon into Lyme remission (if that exists) with similar emotional/pyschologically related trauma...
you tested pos for babs?
beat those bacteria down!!!!!

Anyone know if IV Vancomycin has the same or similar results as IV Rocephin for Lyme? Does it cause gallstones as well?
I took 2 weeks of IV Vancomycin twice daily in the hospital, then 10 days out-patient one treatment per day. I did not experience any gallbladder issues. I was also on oral DOXY + Bactrim.
Been off treatment a month now and about to re-start the IV at home. Anyone have suggestions with what they've learned from past treatment?
My PCP was careful to give IV Protonix as well as a chewable probiotic plus a type of probiotics that were flakes mixed in applesauce. Had no stomach issues with this.
Don't know how my insurance will react to the IV's at home because home health will have to be involved. Few doctors in Texas will give in-home IV's because the insurance companies won't pay.
