I am starting rifampin again, my doc wants me to pulse it every monday, wednesday and friday. I took my first dose yesterday 150 mg and felt lousy from it that night. I had vivid dreams, more dizziness, hyper. Does anyone else have this, is this a bart herx? Is it safe to pulse rifampin?
thanks so much for your help.
Diana

If you are taking Rifampin for Bart then you really should be taking it every day. Bart reproduced very quickly, so it wouldnt do much good to only take it every other day. I think some people have had troubles with it being intense, maybe hes just working you up to full dose?

I think it is good to ramp up on this drug with the goal being 600 mg a day. If you start out with 600 mg a day it will be too much.

I just started rifampin one week ago. It made my head feel clearer. I started with 600mg (300mg in the am and another 300 at night). It's probably too early yet to say whether it's working! My llmd wants me on it for 6wks. Is there a reason it's only a 6 week course? Is it too harsh on the liver? Just curious.

That is really weird that your doctor told you to pulse Rifampin. It is one drug that needs to be taken consistently because if you quit and restart it, you may experience flu like side effects.

The usual dosage is 600mg a day. I took it with a macrolide, like biaxin or zithromax.
