What is the best parasite lab. In US or whereever. We have realized wife has strongyloides or roundworm and filarial markings on her arms. We have just found our son is carrying amebic dysentry which can co incide with roundworm. We need a good lab to facilitate testing to get the doc to treat him.

Doing the serum antibody test may be helpful in diagnosing strongyloides. Several labs offer such testing but I am not sure which one is considered the best though.

This article is from Australia but I thought that it was rather interesting. Especially so when you consider the fact that the Strongyloides parasite is considered endemic to the southeastern half of the United States.
The article also discusses the usefulness of the IgG antibody test.
"Strongyloides IgG EIA (ELISA) serology is a sensitive diagnostic test for chronic strongyloidiasis.
Low cost and useful to monitor cure.
Feces insensitive and labor intensive"
"Strongyloides IgG EIA serology is a useful tool to monitor effectiveness of treatment in endemic communities
A positive Strongyloides IgG serology result does not indicate past infection
Past infection occurs when the patient is asymptomatic, negative stool and low negative serology.
Ivermectin is more effective than albendazole" Posts: 1223 | From U.S.A | Registered: Jul 2007

Just read about a lab on Huffington post article about parasites. Check out Jetti Katz Tropical medicine Lab in New York.

Illnesses caused by parasites are all self-limited, 1 - 2 weeks in duration when recognized and treated.
They all can be cured with short 1 - 2 week courses, of antiparasitic drugs taken orally, which are readily available at any pharmacy in the U.S.

Besides that outlandish claim... the site looks reputable and informative... I would love to hear if someone has a test done - if it is as accurate as they claim...
They claim 95-97% accuracy. (that seems VERY high) They also claim:
Forty percent of Americans have chronic undiagnosed or misdiagnosed gastrointestinal symptoms. Most large studies have shown 2 - 20 % of these patients actually have parasites as the cause of their illness.
I believe this figure to be low! So perhaps their testing is not as accurate as they think it is!

momlyme,
Thanks for that info. Sorry, that I didn't read all the info on their site. Was going by an earlier post from a member here who said they were one of the best,
Their claims don't sound right to me either. Don't think I would trust this lab after all.

I thought that you might find this interesting.
It also appears as though the Gelatin Particle Indirect Agglutination (GPIA) antibody testing method may be superior to the ELISA antibody test for detecting chronic strongyloidasis. I am not sure where a person could get this blood test though.
"As low titers of strongyloid-specific antibodies are noted in hyperinfection along with a low or normal eosinophil count, GPIA is more sensitive than ELISA in detecting the specific immunoglobulin in cases of chronic infection and hyperinfection."

I noticed that Private Md labs offers the Strongyloides IgG antibody test. On the link down bellow just scroll down to near the bottom of that page.
You can order the test through Private MD labs without having to go to a doctor.
I have used their lab services before and was very pleased with them. They will send you the requisition papers and then you sign them and take them to your nearest blood draw station, it was LabCorp for me.
