Hey everyone,
So, you can really see the veins in my eyes. They are red all the time and they look like they have road maps on them. I cannot wear my contacts anymore it is to painful. They also seem like they are inflamed. Sometimes they hurt to move as well. Has anyone else experienced this with bartonella??
Thanks!

Yes, yes, yes. Sometimes I have the feeling that my left eye (my worst eye) isn't working. Like I can't feel it moving like no tension on the muscle like the other eye. It is getting a little better though.

i have this too. red eyes. sometimes i will wake up with bruised and red eyelids. left eye is painful to move..more than painful.
and as for the headache with rifampin....same here, excruciating frontal headache with temple veins engorged in appearance.
think the eyes are also infection related (perhaps bart...lyme affects the eye too). Eye doctor treating for dry eye. the systane drops in the daytime and GenTeal gel drops at night are giving me some relief...
can be purchased in any pharmacy or wal-mart over the counter.
are your eyelids also swollen and when you look down you can see your cheeks?
@been: my eyes look like yours except mine is the inner eye, not the outer as yours appears.

Treat Parasites. They have a huge effect on the eyes. The longer you let it go, the worse it gets.
Take care.

I have not been able to wear my contact lenses since contracting these diseases.
Also, many evenings the 'roots' of my eyelashes hurt? Anybody else have this symptom?

Dry blood shot eyes were one of my most serious symptoms prior to diagnosis. I wore sun glasses in the house and put gooey ointment in them. I was miserable.
Then a person told me about hyaluronic acid and it works wonders on dry eyes. You can buy it at a health food store. It replaces the collagen in your eyes which is eaten up by the infections.
Be sure to buy the more expensive brands that are vegetarian. Don't get rooster comb or chicken sternum (worthless). It is also benificial for arthritis and preserving elasticity in your skin.

Presumably, our eyes should get better once we get the infections taken care of?
We all know by now that these infections can become chronic and require long-term treatment. However, I was surprised to come across some information in a mainstream/traditional medical article actually admitting to that fact by stating that Bartonella can become chronic, therefore requiring long-term treatment.
This article stated that in some cases it could take up to four years of treatment. Yikes! This article was speaking specifically about the Trench Fever/Shin Bone Fever strain of Bartonella.
Pretty much all of the infections that we Lyme patients tend to carry around can cause eye problems, I think.
For Bartonella, though, bloodshot, scratchy, itchy, blurry eyes, uveitis, retinitis and just about any other "itis" related to the ocular region can appear.
Some of the eye issues I've been diagnosed with are: Keratitis, Blepharitis, Uveitis, Conjunctivitis, and a pending diagnoses of Parinauds Ocular Glandular Syndrome. All of these problems flaired in me during Bart treatment herxes.
There is some information on Bartonella eye stuff in the Bartonella Information Thread here on Lymenet. I'm afraid that thread has become mind-numbingly long.
It can be hard to read everything with bleary eyes and on brain dead days. But, I keep adding to the thread anyhow, because I'm using it as a reference. lol
Also, from the Bartonella Information Thread is this: "EYES: Conjunctivitis, Bartonella Neuroretinitis, Loss of Vision, Flame Shaped Hemorrhages, Branch Retinal Artery Occlusion with Vision Loss, Cotton Wool Exudates, Parinauds Oculoglandular Syndrome, and Papilledema."

Speaking of the Trench Fever variety (which is bartonella quintana), the eye-pain-upon-moving-the-eyes is a specific symptom of it. I just learned that about a week ago and was amazed! Up until then I was (for some reason!) under the impression no one would know what I was talking about.
Tricia it sounds like you're having a lot of anxiety about this today and don't forget that bart is HUGE for causing those types of symptoms; one day at a time, no one knows what will happen and we just do the best we can! There's a lot more chance that with treatment you'll be back to good health--bartonella responds quickly to treatment, and even if it's hard to get rid of, you'll at least feel better than you do now!

My son had bouts of unexplained episcleritis for 3 years (presents as red, sore eyes). He started A-Bart and the red eyes flared up for 3 weeks then calmed down, LLMD said good, that is a herx. This was while he was taking one drop of A-Bart every 10 days ! Now he is on a higher dose of A-bart (3 drops twice a day), he agains complains of heavy, watering, tired eyes at times and then it passes in 10 minutes. These are his only symptoms on A-Bart so I think it is targetting the Bartonella in his eyes
