I have just upped Malarone and have terrible air hunger, AWFUL depression and Nausea - literally within hours of upping the dose.

Is this where I am hitting Babesia or a side effect of the Malarone

If it is a side effect of the drug I assume this goes when you lower or stop the Malarone

I took malarone before and was able to take a much higher dose, so am unsure why this is happening this time

Malarone does cause horrible nausea for me. I take an anti nausea med 30 min prior to taking it. I hope you feel better soon.

The malarone is horrible! I was so nauseous for two months on the malarone and I was never sure whether it was the babesia or the drug or the combo. I do think it did get that babesia because it is now gone!

What I did was eat creamy things the only thing that helped like ricotta, sour cream. I still ended up losing 15 lbs. but the real help was from accupuncture.

Find a good accupuncturist who trained in China along with herbology. She helped me immensely and worked on that nausea. It took awhile.

Good luck!

Are you eating something with it? Maybe that would help if you aren't

I am treating with Mepron and when I started my depression intensified so I would guess that is a herx and at least partly what you are experiencing.

Look at side effects on drugs.com

Riannabri, when I took malarone several years ago I took 4 pills a day for a little over 2 months. I don't remember having air hunger, but I absolutely remember the awful depression and nausea.

In my long fight with lyme/co-infections, it has been one of the hardest drugs for me to tolerate. At times the depression was so awful I could hardly stand to be in my own skin.

As Debra said above I also was never sure if it was a herx, a side effect of the medication, or something else. At the time I honestly just thought it was the drug.

What I do think is that it cured me of the babesia. Absolutely no more night sweats after taking it. Before the malarone the night sweats were awful. Would wake up completely soaked as if I had just taken a shower. Sheets and pillow would be soaking wet also.

When I stopped taking the drug the depression and nausea went away quickly.

Good luck and I hope you are able to keep going with the malarone because I absolutely believe that it got rid of the babesia for me. it has been 3 years since taking and not a night sweat since.

Jeff

I had terrible air hunger. Check the side effects that come with each script. You will find a few of your symptoms on the list.

I cannot stress enough reading the side effects that accompany each prescription. READ THEM. Then you will know what to look for when new symptoms pop up.

I had bad breathing issues before I started babs treatment(lariam). It got better, then worse for a week, now it's better and styaing better.

I think the short time it got worse was a herx.

Air hunger was one of the main symptoms I had with babesia. It went away with prolonged treatment.

Sometimes when you hit the babesia your symptoms flair. When I treated babesia anxiety, air hunger, chest pressure, shortness of breath, imbalance problems, fatigue and night sweats were all issues. They got worse when I first started treating and then gradually went away.

It took a long time. Treated for over 3 years.

I can pop malarone on an empty stomach like tic tacs. lol. Sorry to hear it's tough on your stomach.

I don't know if it's the best answer but ginger tea helps. There's this stuff called Yogi Tea in the super market that isn't bad.
