My understanding is Coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin E should be avoided whilst on atovaquone, as they are all fat-soluble antioxidants that tend to neutralize the pro-oxidant effects of atovaquone against Babesia.
Is Glutathione a fat soluble antixoidant. I ask as I read this (below)and am concerned as I do IV Glutathione daily??? My LLMD has never mentioned avoiding Glutathione with Babesia Meds
THIS WAS ON A LYME SUPPORT WEBSITE There was an important point made about the use of GSH while on Babesia treatment in that it should be avoided. Most Babesia treatments are pro-oxidant therapies whereas GSH is an anti-oxidant therapy. Anti-oxidants should generally be avoided while treating Babesia with pro-oxidant therapies.
SO SHOULD GLUTATHIONE BE AVOIDED WHEN ON MALARONE OR MEPRON??

I have to edit my post because I found the answer to my question about ALA and vitamin E which is here. It does not say anything about glutathione but that has poor oral absorption.
Quote from book by Dr. S.
". The second precaution concerns the use of supplement doses of coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, and vitamin E while on atovaquone. These should not be used while taking atovaquone because they are all fat-soluble antioxidants that tend to neutralize the pro-oxidant effects of atovaquone against Babesia. "
I wish I could remember things better. I bet I have read this at least ten times.

I certainly hope that taking alpha lipoic acid isn't a problem when taking Mepron! I've been taking both for a while now, I use alamax CR alpha lipoic acid (at the suggestion of my doc)!

Skies, Dr. S is the ONLY one I know of that writes not to take ALA with Mepron. I have been taking it too as it is wonderful for detoxing the liver. In fact it can save people who have damaged livers from alcoholism or even some kinds of poison.
In Dr. S' book on Babesia he says not to take CoQ10 with Mepron but nothing about any other supplements. Who are we to believe?
I will probably continue to take it in the middle of the day several hours apart from Mepron. I am getting better so it must not be interfering too badly.
Rianni, Dr. S recommends ALA and a sublingual form of glutathione in his book. He explains several different treatment options (Dr. B, Dr. J and Dr. H) and does not specify if there is any reason to avoid using these supplements with any of these treatments so I don't believe these three doctors are concerned.

I'm being treated for Babs (Zith & mepron) and my doctor told me to take milk thistle and glutathione. i take these 1/2 hour before I eat and medication after I eat. I'm getting better and my liver numbers are only a little elevated, nothing to be concerned about.

nefferdun, thanks for the reply. I need lots of help with detox, and I think that ALA is one thing that has actually helped me. I don't take CoQ10. I will just continue to trust my own doc and will keep taking it for now.
