I've had one of my weirdest symptom yet and I was curious if anyone else has. Last night when I went to bed, my arm itched. No matter where I itched, the itchy sensation would not go away. I thought for sure I would wake up in a rash but I was fine. I am a little itchy here and there, but it is winter with dry skin and all.

Then, two toes of my right foot felt weird, like they were numb and distant.
I'm currently being treated for Babs. It's possible this is just yeast. I have started exercising again and now my neck is a little sore and my left foot/ankle feels "clubby" while I exercise. My eyes are so red and almost shut when I wake up, though I actually feel like I got a good nights sleep.

Not sure if this is Lyme creeping back in or I'm just getting weird herx from Babs. Doc said babs herx are strange though I herxed long ago and didn't think I would herx again. Does this make sense? Also, it seems the artemisia quality is different. First month did nothing. Second month tasted funny. This month it seems more like nothing again. Argh!

And why are the bottoms of my feet so red? Latter part of the first month on Babs treatment, all this skin came off my feet, my feet seemed to heal (had some cracked skin), but now they are all pink/red after I shower and feel like the skin is way too thin.

So weird. How does one explain all this to a doctor?

You're not alone.

My first treatment choice for Babesia was trying Plaquenil w/ Minocycline + Azithromycin. I had some intense reaction from it that hit a high note in 10 days and forced me to abort. My skin became shiny and thin -- so much you could break it open with a gentle slice from a pen. My veins were inflamed, and I was having severe shooting pains throughout the nerves of my body; from head to toe.

Your symptoms relate closely to mine. I'm now deep into having some kind of scleroderma issue with my Lyme progression. But, I'm thinking it could be Babesia causing these problems after all.

I have a lot of issues with my left ankle, so when you mentioned that, I had an ah-ha feeling. There's this pressure and tingling that surrounds the ankle. It bruises up, but I've been able to control it on Bactrim and Rifampin.

Late at night, if I've been resting my feet for a while, when I get up to go to the bathroom, my feet turn beet red and has a throbbing feeling to it.

My gut feeling says you're in some kind of Babesia herx. I just started Mepron yesterday, so we'll see what it does for all these symptoms I talked about as well.

Wolfed out,
your mention of "some kind of scleroderma issue" attracted my attention. I had a bull's eye rash in 2000. Three years later my skin started thickening and became shiny and tight. I have gone to a scleroderma specialist who claims I don't have scleroderma... It is getting progressively worse. At the moment, I feel that the muscles or nerves or something else is throbbing and burning in my legs. It is a very unpleasant sensation. I have a constant tingling in the last two fingers of my right hand and many more weird symptoms. I have been on Zithro and Malarone for 3 1/2 months already and I don't think what I am experiencing is an herx reaction. I wonder if it is a side effect to the malarone?

I'm so sorry, I didn't see this sooner.

I had problems with Mepron, and that threw me off-course for a few days and had to focus on finding some answers.

For me, my scleroderma issues only seem to become real evident when I try taking Mepron or Plaquenil. Otherwise, it's not a big problem -- maybe even improving.

But, I don't know what that tells me yet. It's obvious I still have Babesia to deal with, and why I have a sclero-flare with Babesia drugs is confusing at the moment. It isn't something that is commonly reported.

I've decided to look into adrenal/hormone issues as a reason for this. And, then I'll be coming back to this after I've resolved some other issues.

Only information I found is that scleroderma lyme-related problems is more common in the European strain of Bb, and is not widely recognized in the US. That says very little about why it's an issue for me.

Just a side note for the mention of your current symptoms. Tingling is more commonly associated with Bartonella. I don't know if you've done any treatment for Bartonella, but you should know that lowering the load of one infection like Babesia can bring to the surface Bartonella.

Mail me for an update some time in the future. I'm so busy researching, I won't remember. I wish you well.

Oh, ONE MORE THING!

Discussion is filled with scleroderma topics on the Roadback website, and many there are using what they call AP (Antibiotic Protocol).

It's basically Minocycline and Ceftin. I believe Minocycline 100mg 2x daily and IV Ceftin 5 days a month.

I happen to be taking Minocycline as part of my current protocol, and have been since Feb of 2009. Maybe this is why my symptoms are reduced?

Mepron can cause pruritis, which sounds like it might be what you have. In any case, I hope you get it figured out soon!
