My routine physical/bloodwork on monday came back and i have very low vitamin d.

Does anyone else have low D??
and is it because of Lyme??
or no relationship with one another.

any input truly appreciated.

Most of the American public has low vitamin D levels, as well as many of us with Lyme.

You should use an emulsified liquid product such as Biotics-D-Mulsion Forte and take it with a fatty meal for the best absorption.

You want to supplement with Vitamin D3, not vitamin D2.

Your LLMD should give you an idea of what dose you need.

Very common in the winter. In the summer it's best to get outside and get natural sunlight. I think the push for always wearing sunscreen is contributing greatly to this deficiency problem.

I have low vit D also. It was an 11 actually. My doc also said most everyone has it, esp if you live in the Northeast. Typically docs will start u off taking a mega dose a few times a week, then lower it. My LLMD didn't agree with that approach.

I was taking 2,000 a day until I went to her, she told me 1,000 was ok...but something about controversy with taking large doses of vit d when u have lyme. idk much more than that....and didnt bother to look into it too much. Maybe someone else knows why?

I also have a very low Vitamin D level. Not sure why it is as low as it is, the only thing I do not do is get a lot of sun. I felt I was getting enough in my diet, but apparently not. I have read where there may be a correlation between Lyme and a low Vitamin D level- however many people have a low Vitamin D level regardless of Lyme. If you are taking Doxy then you should be very careful about going in the sun as you will burn easier. Your MD should guide you in the recommended daily dose of Vitamin D.

My LLMD always tests for this. Say's us lyme and comp people seem to need more, always low.

I live in the Valley of the Sun... I sometimes have good levels from getting it from the sun, but usually still low.

D3 is what is recommended. You can herx from too much D3.. which is good and bad... back off if you're flaring too much. I think my llmd stated it helps thin the biofilm and then abx can work better.

My vitamin D levels are also very low. My primary doc put me on 1,000 iu High-Potency Vitamin D3 taken in the AM. I get all of my supps and vitamins through Puritans Pride ... you can't beat their prices. There's always a deal ... for ex. buy1, get 2 free or, my favorite: buy 2, get 3 free. They also have great prices on their clearance items .... a lot of which are product that are just in old packaging .... some of them you can get up to 6 bottles free.

Vit D is supposed to help the immune system, anyone with a chronic infection has low levels, maybe because the immune system consumes it all to help with the fight...

When I first got sick with Lyme I was also diagnosed with severe vitamin D deficiency. My level was 6. I was prescribed 50,000 iu once a week for 3 months. Once my levels got better I was told to take 5,000 iu daily. I was taking them daily until I recently found out I am pregnant. Hopefully my prenatals will hold me over till I have the baby.

My LLMD has told me that it is really common to have vitamin deficiency when you have Lyme Disease.

My D was very low also. I took 50,000 IUs 2x per week for a few months, then went to 50,000 once a week.

It is best to have your D level up between 50 and 80.

Also don't take vitamin D for at least 4 or 5 days prior to getting your D checked to get a better reading.

Hi again all
I have a question to those of you who supplemented: what are the benefits you noticed from a higher vitamin D level? I take 10000 iu a day, i think it helps my energy but I don't know what to attribute it to...

Low Vitamin D also since tested two months ago.
But my entire life was spent in the sun each day with my dog walking/play group business. And spare time running rabbits with beagles almost 365 days/year! (yes, I was a bit OCD!) How could I have low Vitiman D? though I could barely tolerate the sun at all and now I avoid it like the plague as it literally hurts my head to even be outside in the shade if it is a sunny day. ?

Shahbah, I have had a hard time getting my D levels up to where they need to be this time around. But back in 2007 when I was ill but didn't know yet that it was LD, I got my D levels up in the 100's. I actually felt so much better overall. It felt like remission from what was called Fibromyalgia back then(really LD).

After all my work at trying to get my D levels up this time, I am only up to 41 so far. My goal is to get it up around 80 to 100. Hopefully it will have the same effect that it had in 2007.

Only thing I can attribute it to is that D is either acting like a natural antibiotic; or I have also heard that D modulates the immune system, therefore allowing our own bodies to fight disease.

What are using to bring your vitamin D levels up?

There are different approaches.

thanks for the replies guys. Dr. put me on 50,000 IU 2x a week for 3 months then retest and if levels are up then supplement at lower dose everyday.

i'm hopeing this a one of the missing pieces on the way to recovery but i guess it can only help in the long run anyway.
thanks again.
