I knew I had read of a vitamin B1 deficiency because of KPU (aka. HPU). I have researched HPU extensively. This is a major part of my son's lyme battle and the reason he did not respond well to abx.
When I looked at the hpu_2009.pdf document I modeled our HPU protocol from, B1 (aka thiamin) is not listed... I knew I added this vitamin to our HPU protocol for a reason... so I kept looking through my files. Here is what I found:

The low zinc levels are probably desirable by the organism, because during low energy yield situations the intake of zinc would additionally inhibit the aconitase in the citric acid cycle and apart from that, zinc activates further the glutamate receptor (NMDA receptor).
In such a situation the energy deficits and the state of irritability would increase. The brain has priority for the maintenance of its performance ability and for the securing of minimal energy availability. Disadvantages are vitamin B6 utilisation disturbances, but also the increased risk for further disorders/diseases.
Particularly rich in zinc is the retina, the prostate gland and the hippocampus, an organ responsible for the conversion of the short term memory to long term memory in the brain. By a zinc deficit, vitamin A can not be transported either, since the protein binding retinol is dependent on zinc.
This situation explains the fact that cryptopyrrolics often react with massive side effects to a zinc intake. Light forms instead, show rapid clinical, cerebral improvements by administration of vitamin B6 and zinc.
In light cases the affected persons indicate a strong appetite for meat dishes, in severe cases there is an aversion against meat, since the conversion of muscle protein to body own protein is dependent on vitamin B6 and if there is a corresponding strong deficit in zinc and/or Vitamin B6, the organism can not break down normally foreign proteins."
Reviewing this information, I see this aligns with his severe HPU/KPU!
More info on B vitamins: There are a large number of B vitamins that are needed to keep all of the body functions performing properly. All of the B vitamins are essential for a number of different processes. Without sufficient B vitamins the blood supply would not be healthy and this leads to a variety of illnesses and diseases.
The brain needs B vitamins to function correctly and the heart also needs B vitamins to stay healthy and prevent heart disease and food is broken down into the various nutrients by B vitamins. In fact, just about every organ and process within the body requires at least one form of the B vitamin.
Thiamin, or B1, is the B vitamin that the body needs to keep all of its cells, especially the nerves, functioning correctly. It is especially important for memory and general mental health and is one of the B vitamins that is required to convert food into energy.
Pyridoxine, or B6, is the B vitamin that is largely responsible for redistributing the amino acids to create over five thousand proteins that are needed by the body and is also one of the B vitamins needed to form various enzymes.
Cobalamin, or B12, is one of the B vitamins that is important in the process of converting the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into energy. This B vitamin is also vital in forming the protective covering of nerve cells and to keep red blood cells healthy, and help prevent heart disease.
Try to give the water soluble vitamins like B1, B2, B6, B12, biotin, niacin, panthothenic acid and folic acid and the minerals like magnesium, zinc, selenium, molybdenum three or four times a day (divided up into appropriate doses, of course).
The fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K can be given once a day. Calcium can block the absorption of other minerals (like zinc) and some people choose to give them separately.
