Hello everyone, anyone.....I am so down, scared and confused. I take these 3 meds for Lyme and Babesia, and they make me so ill. I throw up, get diarriah, and have the worst gas problem, cannot leave my house. I am thinking about IV drugs, but people say that they are very dangerous, and the Rife machine. Does anyone have any decent ideas for me? My doctor does not do IV's, so I thought about getting another opinion from another ILLADS doctor. The Rife machine sounds very promising. Please any ideas..... am so lost and scared Rozmil

Hi Rozmil-

I just recently starting plaquenil ALONE and it is kicking my butt....I'm in my fourth week of it and I am aching like crazy and having air hunger....Thankfully, the stomach upset calmed down into the fourth week....You might try taking some Maalox with the plaquenil or taking it with a large meal...

I plan to be on the plaquenil a little bit longer by itself before I add a macrolide abx as I couldn't handle both right now....

Perhaps if you posted what abx you've used thus far and what you've tested positive for then people could give you more feedback....

So sorry you're suffering but you will get better....

Hydroxychloroquine IS Plaquenil. Are you taking anything besides plaquenil and mepron?

Diarrhea is a side effect of plaquenil. I suggest you call your lyme doctor and report that you are having this side effect. He will probably change that med once you report this.

Also I hope you know to take some good probiotics while on antibiotics. Otherwise, you can get a severe case of intestinal yeast (which causes terrible gas and severe bloating, often pain, diarrhea, etc.) and antibiotic-associated diarrhea (ADD). See my post about it on this thread:

http://flash.lymenet.org/scripts/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=104498;p=0

Did your doctor tell you to take the Mepron with a fatty food to aid absorption? Nuts, cheese, etc. If you don't eat sufficient fat, the mepron is wasted.

By the way, IV medications can cause the same yeast and diarrhea problems. You have to learn about taking probiotics and eating an anti-yeast diet. That means no sugar, no flour, no pasta, no potatoes, no bread, no fruit or fruit juice, no cereal, no rice, etc. All you should eat is meat and non-starchy vegetables and dairy.

Drinking kefir (plain, no sugar) every day will also help keep your gut in shape.

If your doctor has not told you about these things, that is a big mistake on his part. Ask here and we will help you with these subjects.

If you have never read the Burrascano Lyme Treatment Guidelines, I suggest you do so. He explains the diet and probiotics and kefir, etc.

They are here:

Kefir is good...but watch it because it is dairy and dairy can be a big no-no when you have to deal with candida issues as well as anything related to or similar to what could be called auto-immune. I prefer coconut kefir.

However, now they are finding some patients have some protazoans which tend to create huge colonies of biofilms, in which canse you want to watch your fat intake while taking plaquenil.

TF has said some very important things. You must protect your gut with a good probiotic and plenty of it.

Eat as she suggested.. so sugar, no white foods.

Excellent probiotics:

Theralac

Whatever you take, take at least 100 CFU's per day. Wish someone had told me that 10 yrs ago!

The very short time I took the antibiotic I was on (bactrim) I got *soooooo sick!* and am still recovering weeks later.

I had no such problems when I took the herbal formulas. On the herbs, herx's existed but were minor most of hte time (only a few exceptions, even then not as bad as with the abx) and yet I made really good progress in 6 months.

I don't know if this route interests you and if yes you would have to have a doc familiar with teh herbs, should never do this alone.

I have done the formulas for lyme by Healthy Directions in Rohnert Park, CA and again they have helped me a lot, with very few dramas along the way.
