I posted earlier about this. I'm pretty sure I have Lyme. Currently on oral steroids (since Th) and also had epidural block with steroids. Not good. I'm on Augmentin for a skin infection. Will that help at all to negate all the bad things that steroids will be doing?? I should have asked earlier. I just spoke to my neurologist (AGAIN) and turns out that I have to go to the ER. Surgery is imminent. Scared to have it, scared not too have it (in time). Another question I have (but again, probably won't get the answer to for this time). Has anyone had problems with MRSA? I'm afraid I'll end up it colonizing this surgical site. I'm hoping I can get them to give me some Vancomycin while I am there. Dr Burrascano (spelling??) said in his treatment guidelines that Vancomycin is good vs Lyme AND maybe it'll prevent the MRSA too??

Steroids are what they give rats to maximize the chance that they'll be able to grow Lyme from their blood.

I didn't see your earlier post so I don't know your whole story.
Steroids should be avoided when possible. They do reduce inflammation and sometimes take away symptoms but they do not help the body fight Lyme. They can suppress the immune system and let the infection gain a stronghold.
That being said, sometimes steroids are necessary. It sounds like this is the case for you. Depending on the dose, Augmentin can help keep Lyme in check.
If you are a carrier of MRSA make sure that your doctors know so that they can take extra precautions before during and after your surgery. They may chose to prescribe an antibiotic to help prevent infection.
Good luck with your surgery. Try not to worry and take things one step at a time.

They sent me home. I have to go to the office tomorrow. This ****es me off b/c if the neurosurgeon had called back I would not have had to spend $60 in cab fare to get to the ER and back. It's the end of the month. The doc's office is a little farther away. I no longer have money for cab fare. Since I am home, I still wonder if Augmentin will help at since I am on the steroids? Also, is Vancomycin used at all in treating Lyme? I don't have LLMD yet, but am fairly certain that I have Lyme. Other doctors checked me for it before... but we know how well the screening test is at picking up people that do indeed have the disease.

I was supposed to finish the Augmentin tonight, but I have more so I think I will try to stay on it while I am on the steroids. Not sure what a high dose of prednisone is, but they put 80 mg in my system today! Tomorrow I'm supposed to take 20 mg three times a day. And, course when they decide to stop it, I still have to taper off!! I am tired so I think I should try to get some sleep before the 60 mg of prednisone they gave me in the ER kicks in and then I won't be able to sleep!!
May or may not be on more through the night, but will be able to check in before I leave the house at whatever time. I'm not happy about what is going on!

I don't know where you live but my LLMD is very good about prioritizing his patients with the worst being seen first. Perhaps you should get lyme advice before undergoing an operation.
