If you would list your CD57 and infection/coinfection diagnosis, I sure would appreciate it.
Maybe we can find a more detailed pattern beyond lyme=lowCD57 & coinfections=highCD57?

My CD57 started at 378, with treatment went down to 350.
Lyme, Bartonella, Babesia - clinical diagnosis.

Hubby's CD57 started at 60, with treatment went up to 170.
Lyme, Bart - clinical diagnosis.

Daughter's CD57 started at 57.
Lyme, Bart - clinical diagnosis.

Good friend's CD57 started at 55.
Lyme, Bart - clinical diagnosis.

I don't know what I started at in the '90's when I first got sick.

But about 1-1/2 yrs ago CD-57 was about 30.

It's currently 140.

At the same time I was tested by Labcorp for Bb, and was still IGG +, and IGM+

In the past I have tested + for bart (h & q), babs (m & d), mycoplasma p, mycoplasma f, HHV1, EBV (through the roof).... there have been a couple more, but I can't remember now.

Even with the CD-57 having gone way up, I am as sick as ever. I think either it is predominantly co-'s at this point, or a cross reaction with my EBV.

(Or possibly that the CD-57 is worthless.)

This is a great idea for a thread. It will be interesting to see what, if any, patterns emerge.

Cd 57 lowest was 28, highest 54. I tested positive for Lyme, Babesia WA-1, EBV (who doesn't so it's pointless), and Mycoplasma Pneumonia before.

Consistently between 30 and 40. Positive on 2 Igenex WB's. Positive on band 31 confirmation. Recently positive on a Lab Corp WB (IgM). Suspicious for Bart and/or BLO on Fry slide. Lightly IgG pos for Babs and I live in the northeast (shoreline) and I like cats [Wink]

Sick for 6 months, CD57 = 160.

Honestly, I can't really put any stock in it as a diagnostic test.

Lyme pos (no joint pain, no muscle pain, no typical lyme symptoms, just serve brainfog and appetite loss/weight loss); Bartonella pos (very high titer, fell down somewhat while treatment); babesia neg (treated it anyway for 8 months to be "sure").

now.. since i treated babesia, my bartonella and borrelia meds are working not like 1 year ago, they work better?!

my CD57 is 240-390 since 2 years.

i don't think that borrelia is my main issue.. because like i said, i have no typical pain in my joints etc.. im focusing at bartonella/yeast/parasites at the moment.

CD57s of 10 and 11 (pathetically low) both times tested, last time a year ago. Tested Igenex positive for Lyme, babesia, ehrlichia, and mycoplasma.

Feeling 90% today, taking an antibiotic break, and CD57 is still likely low!

Treating since Sept 2010. End of Dec - CD-57 was 26
as of March it has gone up to 43. I am feeling better. Not 100% but 70%. Lyme does cause low CD-57s, but if you've got under treated co's it can be high.

So, fflutterby, you're saying that high numbers don't neccessarily mean you have co's, but rather undertreated co's?

Should I change the wording on the thread instructions to make this more useful? Anyone?

Mine was 16 in Oct 2010 and in Feb 2011 went up to 28.

But my LLMD said that there can be a 30% swing in either direction so it's really just an estimate.

No Hens, I believe that when you are still sick with a high CD-57 it is most likely the co-infections making you so sick or something else, besides LYME.

Started at 27, was around 60 for a lot of treatment duration, got up to 96 a couple months ago when treatment was slowing down, last 6 weeks now in the 68-70 range after more things added to my treatment.

For me it really has tracked fairly well what has been going on with symptoms and treatment.

Still treating.

from my lyme friend "C" (not lymenet member)-

"I have a positive western blot for lyme and clinical diagnosis for bartonella.

We didn't do a CD57 test until 6 months after lyme treatment began and then it was 57.

Then I did another 7 mo. later and it was up to 63."

I don't understand how to read my CD57 test. The results are:
CD57+ 13 % lymphocyte
CD57+ 5 % of WBC
CD57+ 243 cells/uL
CD57+/CD3+ 9 % lymphocyte
CD57+/CD3+ 4 % of WBC
CD57+/CD3+ 168 cells/uL
CD57+/CD8+ 10 % lymphocyte
CD57+/CD8+ 4 % of WBC
CD57+/CD8+ 187 cells/uL
CD57+/CD3+/CD8+ 9 % lymphocyte
CD57+/CD3+/CD8+ 4(high) % of WBC
CD57+/CD3+/CD8+ 168 cells/uL

Everyone seems to be mentioning a single figure. What should I be looking at?

from my friend "L" (not lymenet member) who has had hundreds of tick bites over the past 20 years -

"CD 57 was not done before treatment was initiated in 2005.

CD 57 was done in 2010 at my request: Results: 60 (wonder what it would have been prior to treatment)

Clinical diagnosis of Lyme and Bartonella by Lyme Doc, but other testing confirmation
Tested negative on Igenex testing after antibiotics.

Bartonella dx. based on skin rashes and external skin nodules on lower extremities of both arms.

Plan: To ask for a C3, C4 and C4a so my immune system function can be thoroughly evaluated."

Mine was 57 in November. I tested positive at that time for Bb, babesia and ehrichlia.

I do not experience any Bb flares. I primarily feel babesia is causing my symptoms now. Last year I thought it was bart but the LLMD (who only goes by test results) says I do not have bart. So according to him it was Ehrlichia causing those symptoms.

It is funny that my CD-57 is below normal and I feel the lyme is under control but many of you with a high CD-57 are very sick.

Do you have monthly flares? If not, it must be co-infections.

Just found this and thought it is interesting:

" Patients with chronic LD and predominant neurologic symptoms had significantly lower mean CD57 levels than patients with predominant musculoskeletal symptoms (30+/-21 vs. 58+/-37 cells per microl, P=0.002). CD57 levels increased in chronic LD patients whose symptoms improved, while patients with refractory disease had persistently low CD57 counts."

That was from Dr S -

Lyme and Babesia
Igenex negative and Equivocal Babesia, clinically diagnosed

CD57 80 after 7 months of babesia only treatment

CD57 119 after fifteen months. Started treating lyme the last few months.

Maybe the CD57 is high if you've treated lyme, but low if co-infections remain.

CD57 was 19 5 years ago prior to any treatment. Clinical dx of Lyme, Bart, labs proving mycopasma, EBV, HHV-6.

5 years later, my CD57 is only up to 52. Sigh. But, I am feeling pretty good so I am not complainin'!

CD57 is 323 after treating with azith.,plaq.,doxy.,amox.,tetra. for 1 year in '09. Pos.for lyme in '06 and, highly positive per Dr.C. Tampa in 01/11.

Also EBV, CMV, Vasculitis (per brain CT).

I'm so very sick and weak and very confused.

I really feel it may be XMRV or something else?

Thanks, everyone, for your data.

The 243 is the score comparable to what is generally talked about. That's a pretty good score, showing, if reliable for you, that borrelia is not currently depressing the immune system substantially. It is not thought to say anything with regard to babesia or bartonella.

It was my impression that anything under 120 meant you would likely relapse with Lyme (Borrelia). If you had a score higher than 120 and still sick, it was a coinfection, not Lyme. Keep working on the those coinfections!

mine was 155 in early FEbruary, when I was too sick to stand or walk! Tested positive Lyme Elisa three times between 2005 and 2010.

Makes sense, Bart or something else is definately my killer right now.

BTW, I did read somewhere that cd57 might be unreliable because one can have plenty of the killer cells measured by this test, but all of them could be weak and useless, so need to be able to test the quantity AND the quality of the K cells.

Again, all so confusing and so many unknowns...I am doubting everything lately!
