I've thought about this a lot since my diagnosis, glad you posted the question!
I was diagnosed with beginning stages of MS (whatever that means) but refused tx so I could find an llmd.
I have 3 people in my life now who have the EXACT same symptoms I have and have been diagnosed with MS and are being treated with steroids.
I've tried to gently suggest lyme but none of them are open to the idea. It's so maddening to me especially after my pos diagnosis but it's their life, I did my part for now.

I think MS is sometimes MS but often misdiagnoses Lyme or other illness.
I also think that Lyme could lead to other diseases like MS, Parkinsons, etc.
Just my opinion, though.

Hum, I think the major differenc between true MS and lyme are the iron deposits on the brain (or on the crebellum for Parkinson). The white matter lesions can be from lyme...

In my case, Lyme lead to MS. Search MS and/or Lyme here, and you will find a ton of information and opinions. many, many people believe that Lyme IS MS.
Remember MS means you have lesions (multiple sclerosis) in your brain or spinal column, it does not define a cause of the lesions.

Several people in the Under Our Skin film about Lyme said they were first diagnosed with MS.

I was told by an ID doc that I had lupus. What a quack.
Personally, I would not believe an MS diagnosis unless I had ruled out lyme in its entirety. Even a trial dosage of antibiotics for this.
There's no going back after steroids get a hold of you if you have lyme. And, if there is, it's a long uphill battle.

MS is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the myelin coating on the brain.
Lyme disease causes immune dysfunction which is can manifest in many different ways among different people according to individual health characteristics and genetic predispositions. MS is one of the conditions that can result in some people.
Some people believe that mercury toxicity without the presence of Lyme can also cause the same immune dysfunction and also cause MS.
In fact, some believe that if it weren't for amalgam fillings and the mercury poisoning that they cause, there would be no need for neurologists because they believe 95% of all neurological disorders are caused by mercury poisoning.
So, in my opinion:
Can Lyme cause MS? Yes, in some people.
Will untreated Lyme always cause MS? No.
Are Lyme and MS one in the same? No.
Is Lyme the only thing that causes MS? No.
Should MS caused by Lyme or Mercury be treated with immune suppressants? Absolutely NOT!
