Our grandchildren recently moved in with us along with their mom and dad. My son is concerned because they have already found ticks and fleas around our house and hillside.

He proposes to spray Sevin everywhere. He has been cutting down grasses and weeds and clearing away debris.

I suggested using Orange Guard, but he feels that is not strong enough.

Any comments? Experience?

Orange Guard is biodegradable and would have to be applied often. One Lyme patient reported spraying it on his acreage and finding no more ticks. Not sure for how long.

There's a company, www.homs.com, that advertises some natural products.

Re pruning, www.wildflower-seed.com sells long-handled pruners so that you don't have to touch the veg. The pruner will also hold the cuttings so you can deposit them where you want.

I have no financial affiliation with any product or company mentioned.

Permetrhin sprays work great. We spray our yard with it 4 times/year. It is the same stuff that they now put on clothing to repel ticks. The clothing brand spray is made by Sawyer. I purchase my permethrin from a pest control company in FLA.

ditto to permethrin. Permanone is a common brand name for it that can be found at outdoor-type shops like Bass Pro, Gander Mtn, etc. you only apply it to your clothes and let dry b/f putting them on, no skin contact. the only thing i know of that kills ticks on contact.

Is permetrhrin ok to spray on lawn when you have well water??? I am concerned about it raining and the chemical going down into our well water?

What do you put directly on your skin that is safe?

Are there any other insecticides to spray on your lawn other than Permethrin? Just hit Lowes and they only had a small bag of dust containing Permethrin however most of the other products with different active ingredients also claim to kill ticks. Any thoughts?

Well I'm going to use Sevin, twice on my lawn this year, once this weekend and then in mid summer.

Really not sure how well it will work.

I am going with the Permethrin. Dutchess county is crazy with ticks already and I want to go up to enjoy the summer. We will treat around the house..now way we can treat 30 acres of land and woods

I am buying the permethrin spray for our clothes and deet stick for skin from Bass sporting also since we have to cut all the lawns and we have many many deer on the property.

Thank God we have many turkey and pheasants since they naturally eat ticks!! Wish I could keeep them caged all around the house!!!

My father is a retired exterminator. His company was totally green and they used this product:
http://www.domyownpestcontrol.com/eco-exempt-ic2-insecticide-p-105.html?osCsid=d837a5df56ee9284a83bdc7a39e1150c
He said his clients SWORE by it for dealing with ticks. They would use it and notice results within a day. I am ordering some of it to do my yard. It also comes as a granules option that you can spread like a fertilized. Completely non-toxic to animals and people. I cannot use and would not use the other products because we are chemically sensitive, as well as having animals and a well. Not going to take any chances...
