He was not in any tall grass or woods today at all. Hadn't bit him but he found it crawling in his armpit. Scary. I'm about to chemical up my yard.

I am going to spray around my houes this years too. Gonna hire an exterminator. My hubby had to have an embedded nymph surgically removed from his arm two days ago.
He was also not in the woods or grass. He is now on 200 doxy 2x a day. The doc is not taking any chances this years. He said they only need to nip you, not even embed for infection.Keep an eye on your son and yes I am with you on the spraying of our lawns.

I had embedded lone star nymph back in May '05. I was/had already been ill since 98-99.
I felt that bite. I knew within hours that I had a tick on me. After removing it and finding another bite an inch from that one, my husband had to strip down and I found one embedded on his arm.
I broke down and cried like a baby. I watched my husband that afternoon at our lake house, cut limbs off a pine cone tree.
I bite my tongue skipped the usual question "did you spray your body down with tick repellent?"
Felt I needed to help him and gather small limbs away from my body and drag them down to the fire pit. Stupid, stupid me.
No I did not use the repellent on myself. I've been angry with myself since.
Heavy deposit of bartonella left in me that day or should I say that's where my sx of bart imploded within 2 mths.
If it's another bacteria, I haven't a clue to it's identity.

I know. He was only at school yesterday and said he did reach into some taller grass for a ball but it would have been crawling on him for almost 7 hours without embedding if that's where he picked it up. The only other place he was was our yard (no trees) or anothert school soccer field with no tall grass and he sat next to me the whole time which is even scarier to me. That would have also been 2-3 hours without having it embed. I'm terrified he picked it up in our yard and if that's the case they are now comfortable in just normal cut grass without and brush or woods or even large trees.

I walked from my house to the car....on the pavement only! And found a tick on my leg. This was last summer and I could feel it immediately. I just flicked it off which now that I think about it, I should have got rid of it but at the time, I was freaked out. I hate bugs/insects of ANY kind!
I'm spraying EVERYWHERE this year! MY hubby thinks I'm nuts.

Is it safe to spray permethrin on kids? If so what product do you use? I will also be treating my lawn and beds.

From what I've read, it is fine to put on the kids clothing. I'm planning on spraying my son's boyscout uniform, hat, scarf, socks and shoes.

I've read they can roam around on the body trying to find their place to settle down? I would check his body and make sure their isn't a bite elsewhere.
Tick might have decided he wasn't happy in the other spot. I hope you've done a body check, head check. He's 11 and he won't be happy, but???
The soccer site sounds very probable. School maybe. Your yard, maybe? I don't trust dead grass let alone cut grass. Treat your yard asap.
They know no boundries. They need a blood meal to survive. The month of May seems to be peak time for them to actively search hi and low for meal.
As sad as this sounds I actively do tick checks on myself from now until winter. My husband plays golf year round if there's a decent day.
I've found a tick on me next day after he played golf. He claims he doesn't go but to the edge of the woods or rough to find ball. I don't believe him.

Well now this is interesting. The little boy my wife sits for during the week had a tick on his head found by his mom this morning. I figured out that my sons was from the soccer field as my older son who was playing had his things by the bench along a fence of woods. He had my 11 y/o hold his backpack on the way home in the car. Still 2 hours of roaming and not embedding although it was probably very close being in his armpit. May is the month. Had 2 experiences in 3 days. Not good.
