Hi all -

For about the past week, I've been experiencing what I'd describe as eye pressure and pain behind the eyes, and in the surrounding areas of the eyes, mostly underneath. The other day I also had pain in my teeth on the upper left side which has gone away.

It seems to get worse with sunlight, but it's hard to say. Like a lot of other symptoms I experience, it is very hard to describe...

When this first started last week, I contacted the LLMD and he said to get off of flagyl which I had just started taking 2 days prior to the onset of the eye aching thinking that may be the cause.

So fast forward 5 days later, I still have this annoying pain and so he says it's not a med side effect at this point, and that I should see a GP. That was yesterday, typical me, I still haven't gone, and now I'm thinking I probably will tomorrow (maybe) go if this doesn't magically go away. I can just see myself sitting there trying to explain the whole lyme thing too...Ugh..

But, as all of you know, the symptoms of lyme are so strange and come and go and last for weeks then go away, come back.. You know the deal..At least that is the way it is with me and "neuro-lyme"

I guess I just expected him to say - yes, this is another lyme symptom, but he didn't.

He wants me to go to the gp to see if it's a sinus infection, but I've never had one of these before so I have no idea. I am under the impression that a sinus infection would definitely also have the presence of draininage from the nose - the involvement of mucus, etc..which I do not have at all..

Sorry to be so lengthy - thanks for reading if you get to this point!!

Any input is much appreciated~!

Lyme can cause both the eye thing and the teeth pain thing.

Could also be atypical migraine...I've had teeth pain with a migraine. And migraines can sometimes cause pain behind the eyes (I've experienced this from migraines).

Sinus infection - posssible, because there are sinus cavities behind the eyes. And not all sinus infections cause runny nose...especially if the passage between the sinus cavity and the nose is swollen shut or clogged with thick mucus.

Have you tried a decongestant to see if that helps any?

Thanks so much for reading my post and your responses!

Razzle - thanks for the info. I hadn't thought of migraine at all. I wonder if I could have one for an extended time like this (about a week?) And what'd I do about it...

And I thought about trying a decongestant BUT I really can't take anything that can make someone especially prone to increased hr, palps, etc. because unfortunately lyme has its way with my cardio system as well! I also don't feel that cloggy mucus feeling...Thanks so much for all your info though...Maybe it is due to lyme - did you experience this maybe?? remember how long it took to go away?

Thanks so much!

IMHO Lyme can definitely effect the eyes. I think I found this link here on Lymenet and kept it. http://www.uveitis.org/medical/articles/case/lyme.html

Before I was diagnosed with Lyme, I had major eye symptoms and have ended up with high pressure, double vision, dry eye, etc.

I'm sorry you're going through this. From what I've read, your eyes will get better as you treat.

Do you have a good ophthalmologist near you? I would start there. On my last visit, I told my eye doc about the Lyme diagnosis (something I usually keep to myself). I was pleasantly surprised when he was familiar with lyme effecting the eye. Plus, he saw how bad I was feeling and told me to call him immediately with any problems and I wouldn't have to wait, but he would get me right in. (I give him A+)

Dkat - Thanks so much for your response - I read through the article (alot was above my head with all the medical terms) but I think it was trying to say that there is a lot of "ocular" involvement with Lyme.

The interesting thing is that prior to treatment I did NOT have this symptom ever, which is why my dr. wanted me to stop the meds, and I am guessing why he wants me to go see a regular doctor.

So I've actually been off all meds for almost a whole week which is concerning me of course, I had practically just started them...

So maybe if I was on the antibiotics this would go away, it's all just a bunch of "what if's.." on antibitiotics feel this way, off abx feel another --really confusing to me...

What I'd like to do is just call him back and say I'm losing ground on abx, and I really think this is a lyme symptom, but I don't want to seem like I'm telling him what to do, ya know?

I do have an opthamologist I've seen for several yrs. for eye checkups and contacts, but I can't get in there until June. So, that would be where I'd go too, but I can't wait that long.

It's refreshing though to hear that your opthamologist actually knew about this, and was concerned for you! That's nice for you to have a dr. local ike that!

Thanks again!!

It was for me. It lasted for about a month on biaxin and plaquenil. I even went to my eye doc. He is very lyme literate (he grew up in ct and his mother has lyme much to my surprise) He told me the pain was coming from the eye muscles just like any other muscle in your body. He was right and it went away.

For me that usually is a sinus issue. Mucinex, sudafed and singulair do wonders. If it is a sinus infection Biaxin is the wonder drug for that.

Do you feel pressure in your eyes if you lean over forward? Noticing any shadows under your eyes?

Being on abx can make you prone to fungal infections - and they've now realized that 80% of sinus infections are in fact fungal. So, go see an ENT who can scope you, swab you (to try and culture whatever is in there) and send you for a CAT scan if needed. It's never a good thing to ignore a possible sinus infection so go get it checked out.

Thank you ALL SO much for your input!

I just got back from the local dr and she said the pain I'm experiencing "could" be related to sinus infection.

I briefly tried to explain to her my situation with the Lyme (you all know how tough that can be) and she said I could either go with her script of the Z-pac or go back on the Ceftin, which I'm supposed to be taking in the first place for Lyme!

So, obviously I'm going to ask my llmd how to proceed, but I figured I'd get back to you all, and in case anyone reading this has a similar situation now or in the future.

Thanks for the update. I believe you and your llmd will know the best route for your healing.

I've been on Ceftin for 5 wks. now. It's supposed to be helping teeth/jaw problem, lyme & bladder. Next Dr. wants me to start treating Bart.

Sounds like a sinus infections. Get a neti pot. I haven't had one since I bought mine. Use it daily!! You probably won't be able to use it until this one clears, but they are great for those of us prone to these infections.

What you're describing - the eye pressure and pain behind and around the eyes - turned out to be Lyme symptoms for me.

I passed all the tests a neuro-opthalmologist did, so his tests could not test for Lyme. Then my chiropractor suggested I drink mangosteen juice, and it worked - no more eye symptoms in 24 hours!!

It's an anti-inflammatory antioxidant juice. There are lot of brands in healthfood stores and online. I like the Ultra one with 70 minerals added to it. If you try it, go slowly and drink water also, as it can be powerful.
