This integrative Dr. I've been using ordered a Neurotransmitter panel on me. All of the results were obtained from Saliva. Keep in mind that what is in the blood/saliva is NOT indicative of what is in the brain directly. However, most speculate that there is an indirect correlation. Pay no attention to my Taurine as I was hitting Taurine hard prior to the testing on the KPU Protocol. At least we know the testing is accurate. Now, I'm back on 5-HTP to address the Serotonin Issue as seen in the 5H1AA result.

I love this lab. They test such important issues that are found in chronic illness. They even make suggestions on how to treat them. Ask your Dr. about these tests from http://neuroscience.com

In this test, they have both their Normal Range, but they also have an Observed Range meaning they have seen levels in excess of what is considered Normal, which would be reported as Elevated. So not only do you see if your low, normal, or elevated, but you also see what others have shown. It's an extra variable that you don't see anywhere else.

For example, my functional level of Serotonin in the brain may be much less than what yours is. So you have this normal range, however, another person may need much higher levels to feel good in the same way and may have number way outside the high normal range. It doesn't mean this person needs to lower their number, it's just showing that you can be outside the range and still be ok, or the flip side is that you might not be ok, but your seeing the observed ranges from all tested.

Gary,

If you are not taking something to block the conversion of serotonin to quinolinic acid then you will feel worse with the addition of the 5HTP. In the presence of brain inflammation the body converts serotonin by an alternate pathway into the neruotoxin quinolinic acid.

Per Buhner's book, Healing Lyme, resveratrol will block this conversion. It definitely worked for hubby.

Somewhere recently I saw a list of other herbs and supplements which supposedly helped block this conversion, but can't remember right off where I saw the list.

I felt absolutely HORRIBLE on that protocol. I guess it helps some, but be careful. I'm not sold on it .... seems like a money-maker for the doctors to me .... and you've never seen me say anything bad about any product before. Be careful.

I was on Neuroreplete for the 5HTP. http://www.chknutrition.com/

I take 100 mg 5HTP for sleep, but this neurotransmitter protocol made me feel horrible.

I had done this kind of treatment long time ago and stopped it.
On very high doses I felt a bit better but the amino acids also can be toxic in high doses.

Fatigue was not better longterm.

I am doing better on abx. I think the infection is the reason the neurotransmitters are messed up.

I haven't studied this much but can these readings fluctuate throughout the day, week, month, in response to environment, stress, diet? I kind of agree with six on this but it was just a gut feeling since I haven't studied it.

I think you need to do this for a while - 3-6 months to see if it pans out. I'm a bit skeptical.

It's always nice to see something official printed out on paper but the real proof is 6 months down the line following the protocol.

I had the same Neuroscience tests done back in 2003. The tests showed I was high in GABA and Dopamine and way too low in everything else, despite my having serious problems with adrenaline pouring out of me at the slightest provocation, sending my blood pressure into stroke territory. Putting out 30 times the normal amt. of adrenaline, eventually leading to low cortisol has since been verified as typical for people with FMS, which I was dx'd with before Lyme.

Neurotransmitters fluctuate with every thought you have, but for some reason, this company feels they are more stable at 10:30 am, so that is when they did the labs. My doctor had taken a weekend course from them and felt he was now an expert in curing FMS.

I was put on Neuroreplete, despite my protests from my Naturopathic training about what it could do to someone like me with high blood pressure, or any other heart risks. 5-HTP and Tyrosine are no-nos with any heart issues. The first constricts the arteries too much for people with heart issues, so the milder L-tryptophan should be used instead, and the second raises BP.

Within a week on Neuroreplete, I was wearing a Cardiac Event Monitor, and unable to walk across a room without having runs of SVTs (very fast abnormal heart rhythm). My blood pressure was through the roof.

I never went back to that doctor again and now must take a daily medication and severely limit my life to help control the SVTs.

Wow...klutzo. Sorry you went through that.

I would avoid this at all costs. Seems most people here agree it's a scam.

sparkle7,
It was partly my fault. I'm a slow learner! Over and over again, I've figured that doctors must know more than I do, and ended up being badly hurt, and even almost killed on two occasions. After studying Naturopathy for over two years, I should have trusted myself, and I have had to learn over and over to trust my gut feelings as well.
