Has anyone found a pain med that actually works for their muscle pain? percocet helps me a little, its just relaxing. but im wondering if there is something better. also i asked my LLMD if percocet is safe for a lyme patient to take and if it would lower my immune system, he said it was fine..wanted to make sure that this is true.

I'm sorry you're in so much pain. Unfortunately pain is still a taboo subject. I take ms contin and oxycodone ir. Oxycodone IR contains the same active ingredient in percocet but is higher in strength and minus to tylenol. I still have muscle pain but its reduced.

You cannot become pain free from meds or you may become addicted or experienced negative side effects. pure opiates are the safest. While some pain medication can lower your immune system, pain also lowers your immune system. The pain I was living with every day was so great that I had to do something to reduce it.

Have you ever considered going to pain management doctor? If your muscle pain is from muscle tightness a muscle relaxer might work best and they would know that. Alternative treatments like massage therapy may also help you greatly. I hope you find some relief.

Take care,

Lindsay

I hate to sound negative, but you dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. What I mean is, any perscription pain med is going to be bad for overall health, and most likely, you will become dependent on it. This means you will have to keep upping the dose to relieve the pain and that becomes more damaging. If you don't take pain meds, obviously you will be in pain so that sucks too.
When trying to get off pain meds or lower the dose, pain greatens, but realize that it is not the lyme getting worse. Now, bc we have lyme, pain withdrawals are worse so if you go that way, decrease slowly. Personally, that is what I recommend and eventually the body will adapt and the pain won't be unbarable. I'm extremely sick with many painful injuries, so I undestand the situation.
If you want to stay on pain meds, try oxycodone. Try to get it with the lowest dose of tylenol there is or without tylenol all together. You will have to go to an RX pharmacy for that. Good luck to you. Make sure anything that could cause pain, like hormones... you're taking care of.

my reg/md put me on MScotin(morphin) for awhile as he said it was better for my liver and was thought as a long term pain med...
But, it put me in the stup er and very fog brain
so, went back to lorcet - which has always been my one pill that pushed me out the door to get things done.. masking the pain.
milk thistle for sure.

Pain was my biggest issue with lyme and co. I used Ultram around the clock. No side effects for me. I used ketamine syrup and medical marijuana for severe pain and percocet or dilaudid for breakthrough pain. Magnesium helped with the muscle pain. But I mostly suffered from nerve pain. Gotta get all teh inflammation down so your body can heal. Careful with lots of narcotics. They can cause terrible rebound pain. I'll be praying for you katrinab.

It is very true that we do not have a chance of healing when pain is out of control. Each person should work with their own doctors and Pain Clinics to come up with what is right for them...what works best.

I do take pain meds, but I still have terrible break-through pain at times.

I just started taking Turmeric for pain...a natural, and I will let you know if it helps.

I think the best bet for someone in moderate to severe chronic pain is to see a Pain Management specialist.

Constant pain has been a part of life for me for many, many years. Going to a pain doc saved my sanity. I was lucky to find a great doctor right off the bat. Don't be afraid to go somewhere else if your pain is not taken seriously.

You may have to try different medications to find the right one for you, but it is so worth it.

I'm not suggesting that you will be able to relieve your pain completely - that just doesn't seem to be the case with lyme patients, but even a little relief can make a huge difference in your life.

One medication you might want to look into is Lyrica. It works well for me, in addition to some stronger opiates that I take every day as well. I can't take just Lyrica; I have to have the stronger meds as well, but I can tell a difference when I don't take it.

To find a specialist in your area, you can visit http://www.practicalpainmanagement.com/patients.

I have heard of Lyrica. I will have to do a little more research on that one, and ask my doctor about it, too.

Thanks!

Another thing worth mentioning is if you are in treatment for lyme and you start improving you will not need to up your dose. I am doing much better than I was and was able to cut my medicine in half. I know this is not the case for everybody, but I had zero side effects. To the honest I was against taking pain meds but I was in so much pain that I could not get out of bed or function for years. This is a personal decision that you need to think long and hard about.

katrinab, I take Vicoden, small dose...helps a little. But you do need to protect your liver as it has Tylenol.

Carol, I sent you a pm. But I have another question; what kind of Antioxidants?

I take Mag, Fish Oil, not the pharm kind, can't afford it. Am using Serrapetase and Turmeric. Thanks

As for the natural antiinflammatories, my llmd had me on Avipaxin 2 caps once a day, Norlox 2 caps once a day, and Resvoxitrol 2 caps once a day. The first two are taken together.

I used to drink a magnesium supplement called Mag Calm. You can get it at most health food stores. Its a powder you mix with water or juice and I found a lot of relief from that.

Just some suggestions that I forgot to mention before. But I absolutely agree with finding a good pain management doctor. Even if they aren't lyme literate, just go for the pain itself.

Blessings to you!
