RYR could potentially have some of the side effects as statin does, as it's basically a 'baby-dose' statin. It's what statin drugs were first synthesized from, hence the problems manufacturers have had with the FDA.
There are studies showing patients taking it having many less side effects compared to statins, however.
One option is to simply start low-dose, say at around 600-1200mg daily. If no problems, you can always increase it later.
If you decide to take it, make sure it's a good brand. Look up Consumer Lab's report on red yeast rice products... I don't recall all of the good ones off-hand, but Nature's Plus and Healthy Origins brands I think were okay. A lot of people seem to get good results from Thorne's RYR product too.

Oat bran and other high fiber/low fat foods are also known to reduce cholesterol and are able to do so without the side-effects of statins.
Total cholesterol isn't the whole picture - should look at amounts of the different types of cholesterol, such as LDL's and HDL's, to get a better picture. High HDL's is less of a problem than high LDL's. Also, the link between cholesterol and heart disease is thin at best.
And the immune system cannot function without cholesterol. A resesarch article shown to a local Lyme support group suggests that a person's ability to fight off various infections (colds/flu, pneumonia, etc.) decreases with lower cholesterol. But we need our immune system to function well in order to combat Lyme/coinfections.
Just my $.02...

Your cholesterol levels can be high upon fighting infection. It's actually a defense mechanism.
Please research cholesterol - it's medical hype is one of the biggest scams to date in the medical community.
