Here are some quotes.

"While the increased amount of inactivated bacteria resulted in lymph node enlargement compared to control mice (Figures 3C, 3D), the enlargement was significantly less (p = 0.001) than that seen with viable Borrelia (Figure 3D).

Thus, we conclude that lymphadenopathy during B. burgdorferi infection is caused by the accumulation of viable spirochetes in lymph nodes."

In other words, they put lots of dead spirochetes in the mice and although some lymph node swelling was noted, it wasn't near the problem that live spirochetes caused.

So, lymph node swelling- lymphadenopathy- can be caused by LIVE spirochetes hiding out in lymph nodes.
